Should I just mod my snes to fit super famicom carts or is it more worthwhile to pick up a legit NTSC J console? I'm not concerned with buying costs.

Considering the mod is literally just removing two plastic tabs from the cart slot you should just mod it.

If you're not concerned with buying costs, you should buy me a Virtual Boy.

If I do the mod will there be a lot of wiggle room in the slot when I put a cart in? Kinda like those damn EA carts in a genesis slot?

There's a little bit of wiggle on the sides since SFC carts are not as wide as SNES carts, but the cart connector keeps it in pretty good; it's mostly just the initial insert.

Over time yes. I was going to quote the first time you asked about modding. My first launch SNES I had for like a long time, but after maybe 5 years from when I modded it (used an automatic nail file to smoothly remove those 2 tabs) it became a problem. I think due to the general width of the slot the pins actually do hold the cart firm in there, especially with those stock old system where it really did lock the carts in place (a feature removed after a couple years why the carts went from having those notches to slopes on the front due to foolish people forcing locked carts out causing damage.) For me it got to where if I'd just bump the system the game would wobble in it like a good 1/4 inch and enough to at times jack up the game and it would need to be restarted and it got pissy about starting too even though it was clean. The remedy I had for awhile was a folded over piece of cardboard or paper shoved behind the game to stop the wobble. I got fed up with it and in time found a stellar deal on a SNES jr so I sold the thing, yet now I again have a stock DK set normal SNES and I won't do it.

I suppose maybe my case is unusual but I doubt it as I put a couple dozen SFC games in and out of it a lot along with local games too so as Indiana Jones once said, it's not the age it's the mileage. I'd buy a cheap adapter or just get a 2nd system as a beater (or a snes jr which I think lacks those??)

Removing the tabs does not cause eventual damage to the cart slot. Just take care when inserting carts (especially SFC carts since they're not as wide as the NTSC-U cart slot, as Popo noted) and always use the eject button to remove carts. When inserting, just be sure to press the cart in straight down, without rocking it backwards or forwards.

This doesn't mean, "Oh no! You mean if I remove those tabs I'll have to take special care when inserting carts?" No, you should ALWAYS take special care when inserting carts. This goes for any console, as well as memory cards (especially CF) and anything similar. Those tabs don't do anything to prevent cart slot damage, they're only their to prevent the insertion of SFC and PAL SNES carts. Think about it this way: The SFC and PAL SNES do NOT have those tabs, and they seem to be fine without it.

Well thanks for the responses. I'm thinking I'll just remove the plastic tabs and play sfc on my snes.

My daughter was really psyched to play E.V.O. because of the dinosaurs on the cart.

We boot it up. Twenty minutes later..... "Oh, so you're a fish, huh?........"
