Your comments on the Mega Buster is why they removed it in Mega Man 9. The Mega Buster basically makes the majority of the boss weapons worthless for running through the levels because many boss weapons are some form of damage out the front of your character.

14. The Stanley Parable (PC)
15. Imscared (PC)
16. Escape Goat (PC)

Thoughts:
Yeah, I got my goat on. 204 deaths, 53 of 64 rooms cleared, 2.5 hours or so.

Pretty good game here. Tight controls, just the right amount of challenge, catchy soundtrack, cute atmosphere—I love the mouse in his little hat! Haven't messed with the bonus levels or the editor (and don't know if I will), but I'll probably go back and 100% the main game sometime. Nothing earth shattering, but it's worth the low entry fee and then some.

And yeah, I get that "All Intensive Purposes" is a joke, but that's one of those grammar things that's like rubbing styrofoam together for me: irritating and makes my teeth feel weird.

25.Wonder Boy in Monster World - Genesis
26.Resident Evil: Code Veronica - Dreamcast

Oh man, loved this one, really did. Played bits of it before, but this is the first time I've beaten it.

My laughably bad end game stats:

Rank: E
Time: 9:30
Saves: 25
Retries: 25

The bulk of those retries are the fault of the damn tyrant fight in the plane (which I wasn't quite prepared for) and the final boss, whose little minion bug things were really fucking obnoxious.

This is definitely the most difficult Resident Evil I've played (I recently beat RE2 as well, and it was a breeze in comparison) but I loved every damn minute of it. Lots of fun, absolutely gorgeous in the DC's vga mode, and well worth the time it took. Plus its just cool to have a whole game devoted to the Redfields, my favorite characters in the series.

I also like how twisted and weird the game is. Makes me smile.

Planning to play Resident Evil 4 next.

Street Fighter 2- This game sits in the 6th spot of my All Time favorite games. And it's not because I'm a huge fighting game fan; It's mainly due to nostalgia honestly. I remember very clearly the absolute obsession my friends and I had over this game back in late summer of '92. Ken was my fighter of choice and my best friend's favorite was Ryu. We would have epic battles usually with me coming out on top (although I do admit he got me a fair amount of times). Anyways for this particular playthrough I beat arcade mode with Ken. I want to play Street Fighter Alpha 2 next as Akuma is my favorite now and I'd like to have a run through the game with him.

Wizards and Warriors- I have always enjoyed this game. There's not much to it, just some platforming and gathering of colored keys and items. Pretty easy.

The Last of Us: Left Behind- This is the TLoU DLC that came out earlier this year and it just focuses on Ellie. While I thought it was pretty good, I didn't think it was as epic as the main game (but for a DLC this is expected). I was kinda taken back when
Ellie kissed Riley. I figured it was just due to confused teenage feelings (she is 14) but after reading up on it I guess it was intended for them to have a romantic relationship. I'm not sure how much a 14 year old would know about 'relationships', regardless of her orientation, but whatever. The point is that her and Riley were very, very close. I do wish we could have seen when Riley turned and how that was dealt with. It would have been another big emotional punch to the gut.

I've been playing a few of the more high-profile PC indie games lately as a sort of buffer between my usual diet of modern FPS and action games. It's always nice to branch out and try different things and the fact all of these games were free helps a lot.

Noir (PC)
Noir was made over a weekend and is basically a short 8-bit take on Blade Runner. You are tasked with finding runaway replicants on a short stretch of a murky city (handily right where your office is located) by following the clues left by NPC's. It's pretty light stuff. The only challenge Noir presents is that killing a civilian will result in an instant game over.

It'd be a bit harsh if I was to slag off the efforts of a game made on such a tight deadline, but it can be a bit annoying as the replicants take about two barrels from your revolver to kill, but they only have to touch you to reset the encounter.

Worth a play though if you like noir elements or have some time to kill at work/school.
Bubsy 3D: Bubsy Visits the James Turrell Retrospective (PC)
A very odd joke game from the Arcane Kids, makers of the amusingly self explanatory Room of 1000 Snakes.

You play as Bubsy (yes, the Bubsy) and must platform your way to the exhibit with some deliberately bad controls and level geography hindering your progress. When you finally get the exhibit things get really weird.

It's kind of hard to explain without ruining and it can be too ironic and on the nose, but it builds to an amusing climax and certainly has meatier "gameplay" than the usual browser based indie title. It's really unique and if nothing else shows that video gaming is capable of the sorts of parody we see in other media.

Dys4ia (PC)
This one surprised me. It's short and simple but despite its brief duration, Dys4ia packs in a lot of emotional punch. Playing kind of like a few Wario Ware mini-games played sequentially, it frames an autobiographical story of one mans experience with gender reassignment.

There is not a single hint of worthiness or attempt to elicit sympathy and it's all the better for it. The way it's presented, with the almost C64-esque graphics with clashing colours, reminded me of a Chris Ware comic, which in my mind is a good thing.

Overall I found it a very uplifting experience, and while I wouldn't say the game either changed my mind on, or gave me a better understanding of transgender issues, it is a very affecting slice of someone's personal battle to be the person they want to be. Again, it's free so there's no excuse to give it a try.
Depression Quest (PC)
Depression Quest isn't really a game by any traditional definition. It's mostly text based, there's no gameplay to speak of and its win state feels more like a lose state. I was slightly unnerved by how true some of the situations sounded to me and I really could get invested in the plight of the unnamed player character. Also, it's interesting to see a game written in the second person, a perspective not often seen these days in any fiction.

Now, it doesn't pretend to be some sort of Depression Sim, but I kind of felt a more accurate title would have been Social Anxiety Disorder Quest. A lot of the situations in which the player is placed are ones where the "bad" choices shut the player out from group activity. Obviously depression isn't a clear cut condition, but in my (not necessarily personal) experience depression doesn't curtail one's ability to socalise or work, but rather makes those activities seem distant or unimportant.

Indeed, while it's clever how the game makes unavailable any easy fix options (such options coming in the form of cliche advice given to people suffering from depression), it can also narrow out any plausible options too. It'd be sort of like if your very first choice in Mass Effect decided your entire path through the trilogy.

I can see the design choice at work here, that by stripping away options the game can better convey the lack of choices depression sufferers feel they have, but it can also make it seem like depression, at least in this context, is an unwinnable battle.

That said, that I'm even asking these questions is a point in the games favour. Like Gone Home before it the lack of traditional gameplay and slightly melodramatic narrative are things I can overlook when the content touches or asks questions of me. And once again, it's free! Even if you play it for ten minutes and don't like it, it's worth a try.

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle (GC)
Truly the artiest game in this update, Sonic Adventure 2 is a harrowing and deeply personal tale of one game developers descent into certified insanity. The way it uses disjointed game mechanics and obsesses over multiple character perspectives really emphasizes the terrible toll fame and fortune can take on a naive young programmer.

Seriously though, I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would, especially after the strong negative reaction I had with Adventure 1 and Advance 3 recently.

First thing Sonic Team did right was to eliminate the hub worlds. The game now has much more flow between levels and feels like the Sonics of old. For me this change is doubly appreciated since I no longer feel the strong dissonance between the hubworlds and the levels proper. I also think that by having as many characters as SA1 (6) but having them split between only three play types, there is much, much less of the padding and boredom that say Big the Cat's sections provided.

Being more specific, I think that certain aspects of Sonic/Shadow's level design has been substantially tightened from Adventure 1, though issues still persist with the lock-on attack and camera. Things just feel better and the cheesy thrills of City Escape cannot be matched.

Similarly, now that Tails' portion is more shooter based like Gamma from SA1, his levels feel more uniquely his own, rather than the timed retreads of Sonic's stages they were before. I'll fully admit it's fucking stupid to put Tails in a mech and not have him do any real platforming but I'll take it.

Knuckles' section of the game is the one that has suffered most in the transition though. It was never perfect to begin with, but now there is a strange emphasis on smaller, more enclosed spaces which just don't suit his toolset at all. Then the last couple of levels are fucking massive for no reason. It's not really more challenging just more time consuming.

And in a typically mystifying Sonic Team move, the radar that indicates whether you are nearing a crystal piece now only points to one crystal at a time, whereas in SA1 it'd just flash when in proximity of any crystal. Essentially it means you could walk past the third crystal piece ten times before the game will let you know it's there. Really bizarre choice.

There is some respite though as the Knuckles/Rouge levels do start off fairly good before going shit. That in itself raises the overall quality of the game above the previous entry for me.

I can also get behind the way you play through on both the Light and Dark paths as though the playstyles are reflected the levels themselves are changed up. Indeed I much preferred Robotnik's levels over Tails'. When both paths are complete there is one long super level at the end where good and bad team up to stop some kind of giant space salamander. The first round against this is pretty awful to be honest but the second, when Sonic and Shadow have gone Super Saiyan level 2, is so gloriously cheesy I can't help but love it.

And though I railed against the extended Sonic universe cast only t'other day and even though I hate his stupid red highlights, I do sort of understand why people like Shadow the bastard Hedgehog. If I was a kid when the game came out I imagine I'd think he was pretty cool too.

The plot is absolute garbage though from start to finish, much worse than even Adventure 1. It has plot singularities rather than plot holes, it's that ham-fisted. Robotnik's grandad is called fucking Gerald and he wants to kill everyone for some reason. Also, Rouge is both a treasure hunter and a government agent depending on the situation. It's just guff of the highest magnitude and almost qualifies as "so bad it's good".

Generally though I had a lot of fun this time through and though I don't think it's a great game and certainly no way near the standard of other better 3D platformers of the era, it's a pretty fun ride while it lasts. And I can't get Live and Learn out of my head now.

Beat Ico last night for the Summer Game Challenge... I'm just going to sum up my thoughts :U

What I liked:
Graphics- So pretty... I paused from time to time just to look around.
Ico & Yorda- They're kind of sweet together. Or at the very least I cared about Yorda. I felt bad when Ico was tugging at her arm so hard haha.

Eh..?
Puzzles- They weren't bad I suppose. Wouldn't say I liked them, nor that I didn't like them. Not frustrating at the very least.

What I didn't like:
Enemies & Combat- The shadow guys were so annoying >:l I just wanted to explore around gah. Plus combat was kind meh since all I ever did was mash the square button.
Ending?- Question because I'm not sure about something...
I'm not sure if I completley understood everything, but from what I could tell, Yorda should not of been able to leave the island, right? And how does she get on the same beach as Ico? How did she get out of the shadow form? It kind of felt like it came out of nowhere, just to quickly make a happy ending... I kind of wish that they had left it with Ico leaving on the boat castle crumbling. :/
So overall, not bad but not great. Probably would of been a ton better w/out the enemies.

These are Together Retro and Together RPG games. I talked about them in those threads, so I'll just briefly touch on them again here.

Beat 'em ups have never been my thing, but I enjoy the D&D games quite a bit. Mystara is superior to its predecessor in every way, though about 20 times harder.

Ys III is the black sheep of the series, but I still love it. A "bad" Ys game is still better than nearly anything else out there. I played the SNES and Genesis ports back-to-back: the Genesis version had better graphics, music, and hit detection but you level up faster and easier in the SNES port making it vastly more tolerable.

I also played Oath in Felghana. It's a top-down remake that stays very true to the original (same enemies, bosses, NPCs) but expands upon the dungeons, character interactions, attacks, etc. It's a much better game than the original.

I have no idea what to play next.

Gonna try to get through that one as well as Jungle Hunt, Donkey Kong, Gorf, and a few other classic "loopers" later this year.
