Even the horses are cut in half......

Laugh: For the past two days my wife's schools have had a two hour delay...because it is cold outside. No snow, no ice, it's just cold. Not subzero temperatures, it's just cold outside.
Speaking of academic institutions...
It's sad, but not shocking. I would bet the majority (by a slim margin) of student-athletes don't intend to take advantage of receiving a free education.

2 hour delays here also. Reason being they don't want kids standing out at bus stops at 4 degrees especially the kids that don't have the proper clothing. That and alot of the schools have portables that don't heat up good enough. Busted pipes in alot of the schools aren't helping.Luke wrote:Laugh: For the past two days my wife's schools have had a two hour delay...because it is cold outside. No snow, no ice, it's just cold. Do you generally leave the water on a trickle stream when it's supposed to be freezing out? That's something we had to do at our old house to keep the pipes going. My dad used to wrap them up, but when he got older he couldn't get into the crawl space as easily, so I had to do it. Not fun man, I feel for ya.dsheinem wrote:: another morning, another busted pipe(s)

I did leave them at a trickle, but alas 'twas not enough. It's never been this cold (negative temps) since I've lived here (6 years) and so this was a first.puke_face wrote:Do you generally leave the water on a trickle stream when it's supposed to be freezing out? Plumbers are all booked for the rest of the week with the exception of one guy who said he can come this afternoon "maybe". We shall see. I am supposed to be traveling abroad for business in the near future and this may change those plans as I don't want to leave my family in a house with no water and no heat (our oil heat is distributed throughout the house through pipe/baseboard heat). Already found out the airline doesn't offer refunds, so that sucks too.

It's about twenty degrees in the morning here, but you are certainly right about kids not being clothed properly. Suffice to say, my wife is loving being able to sleep in. They're not used to cold weather, and I doubt most of her students own coats.stickem wrote: 2 hour delays here also. I'm loving the weather as I finally get to bust out some peacoats and scarves that haven't seen the light of day in years.

Do you have copper plumbing? Are your pipes in a crawl space or do you have a little basement access?dsheinem wrote: I did leave them at a trickle, but alas 'twas not enough. It's never been this cold (negative temps) since I've lived here (6 years) and so this was a first.

Mix of copper and PVC. The PVC ones are shit, from what the plumber yesterday told me. I guess I'm lucky I haven't had issues with them before.puke_face wrote:Do you have copper plumbing? I can access most of them in the basement (standing room), but I think the one that froze/burst is in a wall between the outside of the house and the inside somewhere between the first and second floor.

You may be able to go to the local hardware store and get some copper pipe, and some solder (not sure if food safe solder would be recommended for a water line or not). All you really have to do is shut off your water, sweat the pipe a bit, then the solder just takes form to the pipe. Let it dry for a bit, then turn your water back on. Could save some money, but time is also an issue. I hate having to call the plumber unless it's absolutely necessary. But in your case, I'd say it's absolutely necessary. youtube is loaded with those types of videos if you don't want to wait for a plumber.dsheinem wrote: Mix of copper and PVC. Soldering wet pipes is much, much easier said than done. If you insist on doing it yourself, I would use a sharkbite fitting to replaced a damaged section. Otherwise, I would call a plumber and have it repaired by a professional.
