What was the last movie you've seen?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Well, I just watched Roman Polanski's Chinatown, starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. It was a great detective movie, I really liked it up until the ending. Unfortunately the ending happened to be the one place where I thought it fell apart(not for the acting or the results, it just felt rushed and unrealistic to me). But the rest of the film was really good. If any of you guys like detective movies, this is definitely one worth seeing.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Well, just watched White Sands with Mickey Rourke, Willem Dafoe, and Samuel L. Jackson. The plot was meh, but it was a nice early 90s suspense film. Kinda made me nostalgic for films from that period. I wouldn't really recommend it, but not bad.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
The Strangers, and then right after that I watched Dark Water.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Two nights ago, I went to the opening of The Art House, a movie theatre located at Big Wave Dave's in Avon (my hometown). They played The Exorcist and Ringu. I've seen Ringu before, but it was once about 4 years ago. The owner called me his hero simply cuz I showed up to both movies.
And last night I watched Phantom of the Paradise on Fox Movie Channel, and later watched (parts of) The Dunwich Horror on Turner Classic Movie's TCM Underground. I also wanted to watch the premiere of Blood Feast, but I needed the sleep more. And I've got it on my iPod still (never saw the last 40 minutes).

The Midnight Meat Train...don't let the title fool you, it's awesome. Not quite as good as the short story it's based on but what ever is?

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Oh, yeah. A few days ago, I re-watched Sweeney Todd. I've seen it three times now. It's great. If you don't like musicals, it's a horror film. If you don't like horror films, it's a musical. If you don't like either, there's romance. If you don't like that, it's a historical drama. Depp was brilliant as Todd, but my fave performance in that was Helena Bonham Carter as the rather attractive Mrs. Lovett.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
REPO judging from your recent posts you're a big horror fan? I liked Dawn of the Dead and its parody, Shaun.. Would you recommend watching the original one? And I also enjoyed Cloverfield, and was wondering whether's Romero's recent take on the subgenre that Blair Witch started (I didn't like that one) is worth watching? And what did you think of The Crimson Rivers?
I've been a fan of "non-Hollywood" films for quite some time.. Some recommendations:
would be interesting to learn if someone else watched any of these.. And I'm looking for cheesy 80s romantic comedies like Ruthless People but with more focus on comedy not romance (Hardly any 90s films achieved that)
I've been a fan of "non-Hollywood" films for quite some time.. Some recommendations:
- Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning (not particularly funny but one of the best indie parody films out there)
- Taste of Cherry (Persian man wants to end his life and goes driving around asking people to help him out)
- The Lives of Others (very good drama set in Eastern Germany)
- Stalker and Nostalghia (Andrei Tarkovsky's finest)
- The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (simply brilliant)
- Taegukgi - The Brotherhood of War
- Zatoichi (a very "accessible" Samurai movie, humourous too)
- Le Fabuleux destin Amelie Poulain (cute actress in cute setting)
- Der Untergang and Das Boot (two excellent films about WWII)
- 4 Months 3 Weeks And 2 Days (Romanian film about how petrifying it had been during Soviet rule)
- Seven Samurai and Ikiru (I'm not going to be pompous and claim I watched more Kurosawa films!)
- No Man's Land (2001 academy winner for best foreign film)
- Monsieur Ibrahim (didn't finish watching it but Mr Sharif is a charmer!)
- Infernal Affairs (superior to its remake, The Departed)
- City on Fire (Hong Kong police drama at its finest)
- The Killer and A Better Tomorrow (John Woo's best work outside of Hollywood)
- Run Lola Run (an energetic what-if-scenario film, again from Germany)
- Battle Royale (well known to anime enthusiasts)

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
You're looking for '80s feel good movies then, eh?
And yeah, I've seen a good chunk of that list. You should watch more Kurosawa films. Ran's a personal favorite, but Hidden Fortress, Sanjuro, Yojimbo, Rashomon, Stray Dog, Dreams, Throne of Blood, so on and so forth? All good. Only Kurosawa film I've ever seen that I didn't really care for was Kagemusha, and it might have been the company I was with(the same thing happened when I watched Stalker...). Yeah, I really like Kurosawa's works, some amazing stuff there. And I ain't being pompous, they're good films.
Also, having seen all of Romero's trilogy(screw Land of the Dead), I can say that the first two are the best. The '90s remake of Night of the Living Dead was ok in my book, but in general you can avoid Day of the Dead. It just doesn't live up to the others.
On a funny note, if you look up Ruthless People in Netflix it recommends Throw Momma From the Train, Big Business, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Death Becomes Her, and Outrageous Fortune.

That's not what I meant.. A few people look down on me if I mention the fact I haven't watched much of Kurosawa's work. Foreign film watching shouldn't be an "elitist" hobby at least that's what I believe.

I was asking about Diaries of the Dead as well (what is this genre called?), any ideas? Thanks for bringing up his earlier work!

Feel-good is exactly what I'm looking for! Thanks for the recommendations

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Ah, I gotcha. I ain't looking down on you, they aren't for everybody. I've known some film lovers that didn't like Kurosawa's work for various reasons. But I'm more than willing to recommend a few if you ever feel the itch to see more! I don't think film should be an elitist hobby either, but I think folks should try to watch a little of everything, not just the top releases of the latest year.
Personally I haven't seen Diary of the Dead. From the trailers it came off a bit too much like that subway tunnel scene from 28 Weeks Later...and frankly, I hated that film, so it turned me away. As far as I know there's not a genre name for that hand held camera approach, though Zombie film works for the subject matter.
And if you want some more classic '80s, watch Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. It's the role Keanu Reeves was born to play. Trading Places, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Karate Kid, Revenge of the Nerds...great stuff. Some of my favorite movies. And, since you're on Racketboy, I should probably plug his favorite film trilogy: Back to the Future. All three are good.
