I haven't played Jak and Daxter tbh, so I can't compare to that. In terms of being compelling, I'd say it compares pretty well with the Medal of Honor reboot. Like, the story's not AWFUL, but I'd be surprised to find anyone who was actually interested in it. The mechanics of the work required feels a lot like Super Mario 64 where you have to have X number of stars to access a level (except Super Mario 64 was fun).PartridgeSenpai wrote:So you'd say it's closer to a work-a-thon than a collect-a-thon on the scale of such games? Would you say it's closer to Earthworm Jim 3D in terms of blatant work and not fun, or something like one of the older Jak and Daxters, where it just never really becomes compelling?ElkinFencer10 wrote:Yeah, XCOM 2 definitely takes the cake for loading times, but Recore's were pretty bad. Recore's biggest issue, however, is that it just gets boring and monotonous.

Legend of Legacy (3DS)
This game is very pretty, and has some pretty darn good music. Short of that though, there's not a lot of nice things I can say about it. The gameplay and leveling system are so needlessly oblique. It's almost like an original Final Fantasy II situation where stats level up the more you use them (or in this case, also what position in the party that member is in), but all of the stat gains themselves are totally random. The exact same goes for skills you learn for different weapons as well, making any kind of meaningfully planned stat progression worthless. The game's battles also heal you after you finish them, meaning that almost EVERY battle, especially in a new area, will be a ruthless fight for your life. However, you also cannot use items in battle. These facts combined lead to a system that cannot be optimized (at least not quickly), blown through, or bullshitted. It all comes down to lots, and LOTS, of grinding.
As far as story goes, there's basically none. There are 7 different characters, and you can eventually recruit them all, but they're, without exaggeration, basically all the same. Pile that along with the fact that there's no real character to any of them (dialogue lines, let alone between party members, are very rare) and the aforementioned crazy grinding required (and anyone not in the party doesn't level at all), and you have for very few pull factors to this game. The overall narrative is very bare bones as well. There's some Dark Souls-esque item and location-based lore exploration, but this game doesn't have nearly the level of well crafted environmental storytelling that FROM does.
This might be a decent mobile game considering how very immediate pick-up-and-play the grinding is, but this game really is just grinding. You can quicksave anywhere, not to mention retreat to the beginning of a dungeon out of any fight, so it really seems like the game was just built to be focused on crazy amounts of grinding: It isn't an accident.
If you can find this for cheap, maybe it'll be worth a look, but even at 20 bucks, it ain't worth the asking price. Perhaps if you like REALLY old school, very unforgiving RPG's, then you will like this game (as it would seem some people online really like it), however I would stipulate that most people would not like this game. Of the people I know on this site, I'd that Bones or Exhumy might enjoy it based on the very gameplay focused technicalities and odd-ball battle and leveling system, but short of that, I'd say this game is safe to avoid.

Legend of Legacy is a secret SaGa game, with all that entails.
Specifically, FuRyu is composed of a lot of ex-SaGa and Square vets.

Which funnily we got a rebalanced game based off of frustrations from the original japanese release:

Haha yeah, I have it too and am looking forward to it!Exhuminator wrote:PartridgeSenpai wrote:Of the people I know on this site, I'd that Bones or Exhumy might enjoy it based on the very gameplay focused technicalities and odd-ball battle and leveling systemI do own a copy of The Legend of Legacy, but I haven't played it yet. It is precisely the old school difficulty that enticed me to buy it.

Too many to name. I don't keep them to come back to at some later date though. I'll get rid of the junk or delete it.
Most recently would be the Ys game for Vita. What a borefest. Prototypical maze dungeons with no effort in level design or gameplay. Just slash away, pick up gold, and open treasure chests. Quit after the first boss.
Thought it was supposed to be more actiony but it follows lame rpg tradition. Corny voice acting and all.

Witcher 3 for me.
It's awesome... just got a little burned out. I'll try to chip away at it again another time.
