Game collecting is not what it once was
Re: Game collecting is not what it once was
I personally go with the air popped, as you get a nice clean taste without having to deal with any sort of setup like stovetop.

We had one of those when I was a kid. I'm feeling nostalgic about it now. I should get one of those.MrPopo wrote:I personally go with the air popped, as you get a nice clean taste without having to deal with any sort of setup like stovetop.

Nice design on that one so you don't have a bunch of burnt kernels. When I'm done I end up having unpopped kernels in the single digits. The only problem is if you're melting butter on top the butter takes longer than the popcorn if it's out of the fridge.

Man, now I want some kettle corn from the flea market.
Just to add, you shared some great info on Retron 5 updates when you first joined. More posts like that and less arguing with people is what we really wish would happen, but that depends on you.Tanooki wrote:I guess in the end whatever happens will happen.

All I can say is that since I joined a few years ago, I've seen less than 5 people banned legitimately. This community is very respectful and is by far the easiest to get along with.
One thing I realized very quickly about Dave is that his tolerance bullshit is about zero, and has no problem calling anyone out on it. Hell, I've even had a few rants on here where he challenged me to look at what I said, and I had to check my facts. If I'm wrong, I'll try to be the 1st to admit it.
Altogether, just don't take it personally, it is teh internetz.

Re: Game collecting is not what it once was
I've been collecting for about 10 years and I've just recently decided that I think having a large collection is kind of an ugly habit. I mean I can't deny that a huge collection is beautiful to look at, but if you think about it enough it kind of feels like a selfish and pointless endeavor. I honestly think having a large collection makes me enjoy gaming less. I constantly am thinking about what I'm gonna play next, and sorta rushing myself through games so I can get through my massive backlog. I mean I could cut my catalog in half and still have tons of quality games to play through. It just seems silly to me now that the point of me collecting games is so I can walk in my room and think "hmmm this is all mine."

It's funny because that's basically my whole problem with emulators. I'll go through all the work either modding a console or building an HTPC and when it's all finished I'll go through it and think "Wow! Now I have a selection of 4000 games to play! ...Crap..."PGchris wrote:I've been collecting for about 10 years and I've just recently decided that I think having a large collection is kind of an ugly habit. At least in buying physical copies I feel obligated to play them, especially with them sitting there on the shelf... judging me...

Well there is a difference between building a library for posterity and simply hoarding.PGchris wrote:so I can walk in my room and think "hmmm this is all mine."
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: Game collecting is not what it once was
That's true, if I ever have kids having a big library would be an awesome gift to share with them. Also not trying to take any kind of moral stance on this. I don't think there is anything wrong with someone enjoying a large collection. I travel a lot now and I think having a ton of stuff just doesn't suit me. Feels better to just have a few of my favorite things, than trying to play every rare hidden gem that ever existed.Exhuminator wrote:Well there is a difference between building a library for posterity and simply hoarding.PGchris wrote:so I can walk in my room and think "hmmm this is all mine."
Re: Game collecting is not what it once was
I'm not sure if I fall into the "hoarding" category. Probably. But then, I don't just buy everything willy-nilly, so I'm gonna say I'm not as bad as I could be, and I'm still in the "collecting" sphere. I can stop any time. For sure. Totally. *ahem*
It doesn't eat me up quite as much as it used to, though. I get stuff as I can, but I don't go crazy finding stuff. Just slowly chip away at getting things I'm somewhat interested in, mostly at prices I can live with. I'm willing to make the occasional exception if it's something I've wanted for forever.
There are also some mortality realizations that came into play at some point, so I just enjoy what I can, and don't sweat not having everything I want.
I've definitely imagined what it might be like to have my future progeny play my collection, though. Then I realize that I would create monsters with that sort of collection, so I'll probably hold out on them as much as possible. I was very limited with my play time as a kid, and I'll probably do the same for my kids, to make sure they grow up well-rounded. (Well, I suppose they could end up "well-rounded" a different way if I let them do nothing but play the vidja games...)
