Agree with Dsheinem in that case. Perhaps make the hardest difficulty available from the start the standard, since it will yield higher scores and in one week anyone should be able to clear stage 1 (in theory).

Woah, hang on a minute. Lots of wrong information here:

Playing Gauntlet mode (all levels combined), the max score would be on Judgement, which is the hardest difficulty. 'Legendary' is really Normal, because it's the first difficulty that features every stage.

Limiting to stage in this game makes sense as your score doesn't add up after each stage UNLESS you clear the entire game, I believe.

No. Beating 'Normal' and 'Hard' will unlock Legendary. There is no 'Novice'.

No. You can credit feed through a stage without starting over. This also works for Gauntlet mode. There is no situation where you'll be sent back to the start.

Having said all that, why limit it to one stage for the tournament? We could always just play Gauntlet on Normal difficulty. It's available without having to unlock it and it'll have the first three stages. (Should make clear that no continues are allowed, because it is possible to use up the three available credits and your score will still show up on the high score table.)

Come to think of it, is Legendary actually unlocked to begin with? I think mj has been going by the notion that Legendary is the hardest difficulty, which is not the case. (Judgement is the hardest rank, which does need to be unlocked.)

I can't check my version, because everything's unlocked already. If someone has just bought the game, can you start Gauntlet mode and see if it's possible to select Legendary? If so, then this whole discussion will have been pointless!

Just looked up the video that TotalBiscuit did when Jamestown first came out. It seems like Gauntlet mode requires 1,000 'Ducats' to unlock it. This is a completely trivial amount and you should have enough coins to unlock it after playing one level on any difficulty. It seems to me that the first four difficulty ranks are then available (Normal, Hard, Legendary and Divine) so everyone should have access to Gauntlet Legendary after a few minutes' play.
