Re: Poll: who are you voting for this year?
The Proposals in Michigan have focused my attention more than the Presidential Election. They have far greater impacts for the people of our state, and as such carry more weight in terms of my vote.
However, even though we have an active theater of War, we are in this perpetual cycle of the military-industrial complex. There has to be a balance of defense spending in the bigger picture of the federal budget. This article sums up my opinion on the matter: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/05/opini ... =1&_r=1&hp
"But Eisenhower’s least heeded warning — concerning the spiritual effects of permanent preparations for war — is more important now than ever." Is a great quote. I think this plays a bigger part in the stagnancy of our economy than people really understand.
I'll disclose that I'm a military brat, an independent voter, and tend to lean towards the socially liberal, fiscally conservative on the political spectrum. I believe that our Armed Forces do the right thing, and only a few individuals (politician, or service member in extreme scenarios) act in their own interest to tarnish our overall credibility.
What's alarming is neither of the two bigger candidates are willing to reconsider the amount of money for Defense. Consider the Soviet Union's collapse and the proportion of the budget allocated to defense spending--it's unsustainable and is the greatest factor attributive to the collapse of the USSR.

...except that representative democracy is the best form of goverment on earth. Moreover, since almost any form of government beats the shit out of anarchy (I do not think that any of us would be too excited about the prospect of relocating to Somalia), it is also the best way of governing the relations between people.elmagicochrisg wrote:Which says absolutely nothing...prfsnl_gmr wrote:Representative democracy is currently the best form of governance on the planet.![]()
In any event, Luke is right. The electoral college was a briliant idea. I might have linked to it earlier in the thread, but here is a great article explaining why it works so well:

Well, here in Belgium we have the same thing. And all I see is 'democracy' serves the rich, and fucks the man in the street...prfsnl_gmr wrote:...except that representative democracy is the best form of goverment on earth. It doesn't even matter what we vote for. It makes no difference whatsoever...
But then again, maybe that's the reason my country has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. If not the highest...
List of countries by suicide rate
Note 1: Recently released figures by official Belgian authorities suggest a considerably higher rate of 53.1 persons (total) per 100,000 people per annum in 2009 (5,712 cases in a population of 10,749,000 (=10,666,866 as of 1 January 2008 increasing by 0,77% per annum.) as of 1st January 2009).
So much for democracy...

I think everyone would be much happier if they just accepted the fact that the rich are going to fuck them over, instead of trying to fight against it.
