Don't get me wrong...the ending is good for what it is. I just thought that taking the movie in a different direction than every other "found footage" film would have elevated it from a very good horror film to a great one. It certainly had the opportunity to go in a different direction, and it felt like swerved back into "normalcy" at the last possible minute.
Also, I do enjoy a good G, PG, or PG-13 horror film. I often think that extreme violence or gore are used as a cheap substitute for effective film making.

I didn't like the ending of Last Exorcism either.
@Ack: House on Haunted Hill is pretty similar to the Haunting... but I like the film of Haunted A Hill way more.

Ginger Snaps
The recent talk made me want to re-watch this. However, as there's a lot of you who haven't watched it yet, I want to wait for spoilers/discussion. So I'll leave you with 3 facts instead:
1. I love werewolf movies.
2. This is maybe my favorite werewolf movie.
3. Katharine Isabelle rulez.
5/5

Happy Birthday To Me (1981)

Unlikeable characters, absurd plot twists, corny 80's dialogue, fez hats, and a scooby doo ending, this was pretty entertaining(in an 80's slasher movie kind of way).
FYI, you can stream this free on Crackle right now, if you don't mind the odd commercial here and there.

Maniac (1981)
Sisters
Haxan
Vampyr
Videodrome
Hasu
Cronos
Corridors of Blood
Carnival of Souls - I forgot I've already seen this, so off it goes...
Roesmary's Baby - marvelously acted but quite plodding; an excellent payoff scene, though
Curse of the Demon
Posession
Dagon
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Nightmare on Elm Street 2, 3 and maybe 4
Omen 4
Ernest Scared Stupid
Rebecca
Cabin in the Woods
Silent Hill 1 and 2

Also watched:
Dementia 13 - I have seen it before, but I recently watched it with a friend who quite enjoyed it.
Looks like I have some marathoning to do!

ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968)
A rape victim of director Roman Polanski just signed a deal to have her memoirs published. When I say "just" I mean earlier today. I'm going to have to separate Roman the Rapist from Roman the director, as no way could I honor a rapist.
But ROSEMARY'S BABY could have been a monumental disaster had it not been for Roman's direction. The performances are near perfect, but the way the story unfolds is perfect. There is a twist, and at the same time there isn't. We know that someone is walking into a mine field, and there is nothing we can do but watch a tragedy unfold, which is where the movie gets its brilliance. It's the opposite of a M. Night Shyamalan, and for a movie released in 1968, it has also aged better than any Shyamlan movie I can think of.

Just watched Vampyr (a.k.a. Against the Flesh) - which is my first foray into the world of Carl Theodor Dreyer. It is very stylish if a bit slow and inconsistent, but there are some very nice tracking shots, some interesting effects, and overall it is a very compelling take on the vampire genre from early cinema.
Does anyone else have much familiarity with Dreyer's work? I'd be interested in knowing what people would recommend from earlier or later in his career...

I've only watched VAMPYR and DAY OF WRATH. If I remember correctly, Day of Wrath was a feast for the eyes.dsheinem wrote: Does anyone else have much familiarity with Dreyer's work? I'd be interested in knowing what people would recommend from earlier or later in his career...

I really enjoy Rosemary's Baby. I try to recommend it to people sometimes who've never heard of it, and it's hard to describe the basic plot of the movie without making it sound really dumb.
Re: noiseredux October horror film spooktacular 2012
FWIW Wikipedia has lots of nice things to say about his Joan of Arc film, though the time span between his films is also intriguing.Luke wrote:I've only watched VAMPYR and DAY OF WRATH. It's also weird to think that Vampyr is only a year or two before something like It Happened one Night or The Man Who Knew Too Much, and only 7 years or so before we'd get stuff like Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind. The strides that film as a medium made in the 1930s is just stunning, and I can't think of any other era in any medium that quite matches it for the amount of innovation and change in such a short span.
