Yeah, I suppose that's a simpler way to to say it

To tell the truth, I think men get more discrimination in the media than women do anymore.

I mean how many movies, T.V. shows, and commercials have you seen where men are depicted as clueless beer guzzlers and sports watchers? While at the same time women are more often than not portrayed as strong whether it be an independent businesswoman or the head of a household.

IMO, the pendulum is starting to swing to the opposite end and the clichés that are often reversing to show men in a bad light (rather than women), lately.

There is absolutely no shortage of positive portrayals of men. The fact that more and more thoughtful portrayals of women have cropped up over the years hasn't really changed that.

Yeah, I don't think you can argue for bad portrayals of men as "clueless beer guzzlers and sports watchers" being a new trend, that's been around for a while, especially in sitcoms and such. Idiot male characters contrasted against a smart or willful female character is pretty common.

I think for a much more interesting view of masculinity in popular culture, you should read the likes of Camille Paglia.

A while ago I read a very interesting book that was an outsider's perspective on masculinity. It's called Self-Made Man, about a woman who disguised herself as a man for a year.

I thought it was very interesting. There's some observations that are "yeah, I already knew that" and others that are "wow, this is accurate but I never was conscious of it".

She's a very uh... controversial figure. I guess "interesting" is a pretty good way to describe her views.
