How has James Rolf (aka AVGN) influenced you as a gamer?

I think the only reason I own Fester's Quest is because of AVGN but that's about the extent of his influence on me.

As I work at a computer all day, I never got into YouTube until 2010 when I got an XBOX 360. I found out about the AVGN years after the first run of episodes. It is pretty funny, but I never played NES. Went from 2600 to TI99/4a to C64 to a series of PC compatibles. So, I guess he hasn't had any influence other than some good laughs.

What a blast from the past. Noise, I stand by my original statement. Keith's VB video does nothing for me (except I love the music), but I've become more and more fond of the Dreamcast 2 video. If it wasn't for my snoring mother-in-law and light-sleeping wife, I'd blare it right now. Vodka makes me want to do that.

RE: Jame Rolf, I don't watch AVGN, still have only seen a small handful, but his personal side is pleasant to watch. He's a great guy and the game is good fun, but the AVGN character is still too over the top for me to enjoy.

Influenced? I enjoy watching his videos (some of them), but other than providing entertainment value he hasn't had an effect on me.

For those who dislike the Nerd, it's worth pointing out that his episodes are very hit or miss. Some (sadly most) episodes are little more than toilet humour that makes Ren & Stimpy look mature in comparison, while other episodes offer a surprisingly intelligent look into the mind of a gamer. I'd suggest watching his Ninja Gaiden episode. Anyone who has ever struggled to complete a difficult game that they loved should be able to appreciate this episode.

Weird maybe, but I really like way his game room is currently layed out. It's also kinda fun to go through his videos and watch as his collection slowly grows. He's got a few non-"nerd" videos where he's showing stuff in his room and just kinda showing off interesting bits of his collection.

If he's "influenced" me at all, it's to continue building my collection.

Yeah I hate how sterile and neat the game rooms of so many reviewers are. James' room looks like such a fun hangout. He seems pretty "casual" about his collecting too, which I can relate to.

I always liked the AVGN, he was the first game reviewer I really watched. I still like his videos but by this point I'm more interested in seeing him do something else. I will watch the movie but I'm hoping that it will lead to more things for him.

He really isn't a reviewer though. He even admits that many of the games he features in AVGN videos, he likes. Obviously there are exceptions like LJN games and unlicensed crap. He's an amusing commentator for the most part.

Over time AVGN has lost it's A. There's only so many times you can drop the f bomb and shit on a game. But as to how he's influenced me...well I learned a thing or two about games from watching his videos and I've learned about consoles I didn't even knew existed. Because of him I started getting more interested in collecting games and finding others like me, which led me to this forum actually.

So he's greatly influenced me as a gamer.

I think AVGN has been really influential in new media, think about the millions of views his videos have gotten over the years on YouTube/Cinemassacre/Screwattack/GT, you better believe a lot of people who have watched those videos have seen his work and gone "I could do this".
James Rolf isn't the only reason a lot of people are creating gaming videos on YouTube but he has influenced a lot of people. You can't really fault the presentation of his videos, guy is a perfectionist when it comes to cinematography and sound.
