Most TV anime on BD from the past few years will be upscaled from 720p. Most TV anime on BD from the earlier 2000's will be upscaled from 480. A lot of films and OVAs are 1080 native. Cel animated stuff can be remastered in HD and look amazing. I can't even begin to tell you how great Akira, Jin-Roh, Patlabor: The Movie, The Wings on Honneamise, Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, etc.. look on Blu Ray.
However, the upscales, if done correctly, will be better than their DVD counterparts. Better colors. No compression artifacts. Lossless audio.
Ditto. Old cel drawn movies/OVA's look incredible in 720p or higher.
Some old shows have gotten the treatment as well like Zeta Gundam, and it's just damn sexy in Bluray.
I finished Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka. It started off kinda good. Then got bad. Then it became just terrible. But the final two episodes were rather good. Overall I think it was like a 6/10.
Starting Hanbun No Tsuki Ga Noboru Sora now.
Also, I forgot to mention in my earlier post but I preordered the light novel collection of Strawberry Panic. Can't wait.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

Mind me asking for some recommendations of old shows that have gotten nice blu ray treatments? I'm only really aware of Akira and the DBZ movies.
Also, I've been reading up about the situation with Project A-Ko's original film print apparently being lost. What a shame, I really like that movie and would love to see it on Blu Ray.

Seriously. Screw you Shao Kahn I'm gonna play Animal Crossing.
As much as I love Slayers, Isn't Slayers Revolution (and Evolution-R) an upscale though? I'm asking for rec's for native HD stuff.
EDIT: If it is an upscale, at least tell me how it compares to the DVD version. If it's a nice enough upscale I'll just go ahead and get the blu anyway assuming the price is right.

Well I'll just quote something from another site I was on:
The series is presented in 1:78:1 108p High Definition and is an upscaled anime on BD release. The edge enhancement is still visible, as is the banding but the artifacts are not as evident.
But the series on Blu-ray does feature a vibrant color pallet and for a anime TV series, the picture quality does stand out quite a bit compared to the DVD release.

Bubblegum Crisis got a BD release. It's already one of the sexiest OVA's alive, so I can't imagine how good it looks. I downloaded the rips off BakaBT to rewatch someday.
Watching BGC is basically like stepping into a time machine to the 80's:
Whoops, sadly I just double checked and the BD release of it is still just Japan only for now I guess. BGC did pretty well in the US though so hopefully it gets brought over, I got the Remastered Boxset from a few years ago which is pretty top notch too.
Yeah 2040 gets a lot of slack but I liked it for what it was. The short AD Police Files OVA is also set in the same universe and pretty cool, take away the Knight Sabers (the girls) and it was a little darker and more Blade Runner-esque. The AD Police TV (1999) series I thought was absolutely terrible though, the environments/setting didn't even look sci-fi at all ... bugged me a lot I guess and it just sucked.
