What am I doing wrong in this game, any suggestions to improve:

Don't stand still for too long, plain and simple. I love people that just sit there, makes them easy to kill. On a typical Combat mode game, the only time I'll really stand still is if I'm trying to rejuvenate my health. Other than that, I'm pretty much constantly in motion.

Bettering my aim so that I don't shoot a whole clip of ammo to be taken down by one of the other guys bullets.

Yeah, this was something I had trouble with when I first started playing. Instead of just firing wildly, try and concentrate. Just don't pull the trigger because you see the enemy, only pull the trigger when they're in the cross hairs. At level 13 you'll get the Hi-cap magazine. It's useful for a while, until you get good enough not to need it anymore.

I am proud to have earned all of the awards for sucking after each of my games...

Did you get Zen master? I have yet to get that one.

My advice is to not be out in the open with nowhere to hide. Also, check your surroundings to make sure you are not snuck up on. Another thing is that stay near your teammates as they'll help you I'm the meanwhile as you get better. One last thing is to use the premade classes in the meanwhile. This is good as some of the gadgets are unlocked at higher levels and then you'll make your personalized class to your liking and what not.

Yeah, definitely stick with your team mates. And definitely use the custom weapon load outs.
