Brandname recognition is where they are picking up. A large majority of the people in the US will pick up Xbox over Playstation due to brand recognition alone, which is a really powerful thing.RCBH928 wrote:This is a huge risk, no other console tried to sell consoles based on digital entertainment services, it was always a thing on the side as an extra feature (unless its true that people bought PS2's to watch DVDs, which is confusing because I think you could've bought a DVD player for less than $300 in 2000)Pulsar_t wrote:They're largely going by brandname recognition and digital entertainment services at this point.

Think it's brand recognition, or established online service for multiplayer? Perhaps just my impression, but I think MS really took the lead there early for 7th gen, so I could see it spilling into 8th gen.Forlorn Drifter wrote: Brandname recognition is where they are picking up. Can't comment on that, maybe check out reddit and see what kind of rigs people are using, I run it at 1920X1080 with max settings (other than AA, which is disabled and textures are not on ultras it requires 3GB ram) on my rig, smooth as silk.RCBH928 wrote: @emwearz
Maybe out of topic, but what kind of spec. needed for a PC to run a game like Titanfall smooth?

We have a similar situation going on here, people will buy only Playstation because its a Playstation. Though in reality, everyone buys the Playstation because they want to play FIfa/Winning 11 and they play it only on the ps .Forlorn Drifter wrote:Brandname recognition is where they are picking up. Re: Xbox One
I think it would be interesting to see the numbers on how many people eventually end up with both consoles - certainly a lot of users on this site and heavy/hardcore gamers in general will get both at some point. The whole "console wars" thing is such a marketing machine for both companies, it's no surprise that it gets milked so hard on the internet (or on tv in the 80s/90s) and in gaming circles.

Of course I buy Playstation because it's Playstation. With the exception of their portable systems, Sony has never let me down. That's legitimately earned brand recognition.RCBH928 wrote:We have a similar situation going on here, people will buy only Playstation because its a Playstation. A lot of people feel the same way about Xbox, even if many of us don't.
I already have two of the three (PS4 and Wii U); it's no stretch to say that once the Xbone gets a couple of must-have exclusives that I'll buy one of those too. Really, unless you have a lot of bills or are a kid there's no good reason to lock yourself into owning only a single console per gen.Retrogamer0001 wrote:I think it would be interesting to see the numbers on how many people eventually end up with both consoles - certainly a lot of users on this site and heavy/hardcore gamers in general will get both at some point. I dunno. I generally only keep up with Nintendo stuff each generation (although I branched out and got a Vita this gen) and I think it offers some advantages. Less big name titles means I end up buying more smaller, niche or indie games and playing through them then I might otherwise. I'm not sure I would have ever got around to games like Ghost Trick or Muramasa, which I loved, had I been trying to keep up with the big name releases for 5 consoles at once.
Also, catching up with the other systems a gen late (I'm considering a PS3 in the next year or two, I got my oXBox and PS2 several years after my Wii) means that I can build an impressive library for them at a fraction of the price - and I am neither a kid, nor do I have an excessive amount of bills to pay. It frees more money up for other interests, or even just other games - keeping to one console a generation is what funds my retro habit.
I want a PS4. As of yet, I don't want an XBone, but we'll see if that changes over time. But sticking to one home console a generation has it's advantages, and I'm happy to stay like this for time being. I can always catch up later.
Re: Xbox One
Having both the PS4/XB1 has already allowed me to enjoy Resogun, Killer Instinct, Titanfall, and Killzone: Shadow Fall as well as some great looking cross-platform titles. I'm happy to have both options.

Of course. My argument is more that there are benefits to sticking with one console or company for a generation, not that there are no benefits to owning them all
Re: Xbox One
I don't think think there is much of a war going on this generation. To me Xbox One and PS4 are just too similar, and whatever you can do with one system you can do with the other. I also believe that this generation is going to have the least amount of exclusives so that will even ease any kind of "war" going on. As for the Wii U, their sales numbers are just too low for us to say they are in a "war" with PS4 even though it offers different features/capabilities .Retrogamer0001 wrote: The whole "console wars" thing is such a marketing machine for both companies, it's no surprise that it gets milked so hard on the internet (or on tv in the 80s/90s) and in gaming circles.
Last generation we had a good war with stuff like this:
-Bluray vs HD-DVD (No Bluray in 360)
-High prices(ps3) vs Cheap ($250 Wiis)
-Motion controls vs cameras vs tradional controllers
-Huge storage space(PS3) vs hardly any (Wii)
-paid XBL vs free PSN
- Ethernet(Xbox until 2010 I believe) vs. PS3 Wifi (from late 06)
