* = replay

Replayed RE4 earlier this year and figured I'd give RE5 another shot. I've ragged on this one a lot and I still think it's a huge step down from RE4, but I have to say I did have a lot of good memories of this one since I was lucky enough to co-op it 2-3 times over with a friend (same with Lost Planet 2), and well going through it again, it's aged pretty well in most cases and is still a lot of fun.

On that last part, I just have to say that yes, I completely love tank controls in just about any form. Sue me? lol. Not being able to walk while aiming here... oh well, I could careless. It just hit me this is one thing I love so much about RE4-5 and the Dead Space games. That intense "heaviness" to your character and the controls. I'm a fan, what can I say.

The bosses are the games biggest flaws. They were just completely annoying especially running through with the computer friendly AI which sucks and instead of worrying about yourself, you have to manage the AI too (same with inventory management constantly). The on rails bosses were the only ones I enjoyed for the most part, and the Wesker encounters beyond the final fight which was just as annoying as I remembered, takes way too long. Overall the bosses felt like Lost Planet rejects or something... amazing designs visually and all, I love gigantic monster boss fights... but here it just wasn't that fun thanks to having bad friendly AI around to manage.

Lost in Nightmares was freaking fantastic. Damn, I wish the main game had more stuff in there like that. That was quite possibly some of the scariest stuff in the franchise (not that that's saying too much in my eyes), haha. Desperate Escape on the other hand just kind of sucked. Friendly AI woes, etc.

Overall, had a lot of fun with this one so I'll stop ragging on it and do have to say I consider it to probably be one of the last legit good games Capcom did this gen.

Prepped for Revelations now. It'll be interesting to see what I think, but I'm pretty excited.

I don't care if the game may have the most product placement in any game ever made, it is still a solid platformer. The graphics are crisp, the controls are spot on (ho ho) and although it provides a challenge, it is a shiny happy game that always seems to put me in a good mood.

Bulletstorm - 360 (finished campaign mode)

Bulletstorm is fun at times, as some of the skill shots are sadistically fun to do, particularly when the environment comes into play, but overall I was disappointed by it. The skill shot system is not an organic part of the game's design and almost feels like an afterthought. It's very half baked. For example, why can't the player move the energy leash around? Can you imagine how much more fun the game would be if once you leashed an enemy you could swing him around into any part of the environment or any other enemy? This would have been more intuitive and less annoying than leashing an enemy towards you and then having to try and direct him towards something with the kick move. Since the leash is pretty much the ONLY special ability you have in this game(because the slide is useless and the kick is just there to bolster your leash ability), you'd think they could have given it some more variety and versatility in its use. Also, the fact that you can play through most of the game just playing it as a standard shooter without even really bothering with skill shots, which are often such a hassle to pull off it isn't even worth it, is a failure on the part of the designers to fully realize what this game is supposed to be about.

Also, the characters feel like they are written by 13 year olds, with some of the lamest jokes and stupidest use of swearing I've ever seen in a game. There were a few lines here and there that made me laugh or smile, but overall I found Bulletstorm to be very juvenile, and it's hard to imagine real soldiers or mercenaries talking like these characters. Grey sounds like someone who would get killed quickly in a real life fight because he's an idiot. I understand a comic book writer wrote this game. I don't think I want to read any of his comic book work, because comic book writing has gotten much more mature over the years than this silliness. If you play The Darkness games, or Rocksteady's Batman games, it'll be shocking the gulf in quality between the writing in Bulletstorm and those games. The Darkness games are a good example of a comic book style game that can do "adult" dialog without making it sound laughable.

What's really a shame is that I thought the story started off fairly strong with The Prologue, but it's all downhill from there. The funniest character in the game gets killed off in the prologue, which leaves you stuck with Grey for the whole game, who has the most awful lines, even though he's voiced by the awesome Steve Blum, and his partner in crime is just a monotone character who complains throughout the whole game named Ishi. Later, you pick up a female character who sounds like one of those girls who really tries too hard to be "one of the guys" and just ends up sounding stupid most of the time. She introduces herself to players with a line about not messing with her or she'll, "kill your dicks". Whatever the hell that means :roll: I guess that's supposed to be her feminist, I'm just as strong as any guy line. Whatever :roll:

Lastly, I have to take this game to task for having the WORST use of sniper rifles in a shooter I have ever seen. The whole point of sniper rifles is killing enemies unseen. THAT'S WHAT MAKES SNIPER RIFLES FUN YOU IDIOT DESIGNERS!!! In this game, every single enemy can magically see sniper bullets coming at them and will always try to dodge them which is REALLY FUCKING ANNOYING!!!!

What's pisses me off even more is the game's double standard. Enemy snipers will hit you with perfect accuracy for high damage, and yet I as a player am not giving the luxury of a sixth sense that allows me to dodge incoming sniper rounds. That's what I call cheap bullshit. You don't ever give enemies a basic ability that player don't have access too. That's bad design, especially when the enemies who are dodging your shots are just common riff raff and my character is supposed to be an elite soldier with a badass, high tech energy leash that only the best soldiers can use.

God, game designers are so goddamned stupid. Bulletstorm actually made me hate sniper rifles, one of my favorite weapons in any shooter.

I've heard the developer say they were a little embarrassed about the juvenile humor, but it was what they were going for. Maybe you would like GoW: Judgment more? It's the game that People Can Fly went on to make after Bulletstorm. I'm sure it will be less over the top with the humor and stick to more traditional third-person combat.

I played about half, and I thought the point of the game was that it was making fun of the often juvenile humor, attitudes, and characterizations found in these kinds of games.

I haven't heard anything positive about Judgement. I'm not really into Gears anyway. I played the first game and wasn't that impressed by it, and haven't really payed attention to any of the other entries. I'm not generally into shooters anyway. I only gave Bulletstorm a shot because it sounded different with the whole skill shot system, but I feel that the game largely sticks to shooter design conventions. I had hoped the skill shot system would make things more interesting, but it just feels like a gimmick. I mean some of the so called skill shots are just regular kills you'd get in any other shooter, but Bulletstorm adds some fancy name to it and calls it a "skill shot." You blow off a guy's head with a shotgun blast and the words "topless!" come on the screen like you just did something special when you really didn't. The whole skill shot system is really half baked.

I would have probably liked the game more if that's what I thought they were going for, but I just never sensed a self aware vibe from the game. It never felt like it was winking at me letting me know that it realizes how stupid it is and is reveling in it. I think Lollopop Chainsaw is a game that does that well. It's silly and stupid but knows it and regularly pokes fun at gaming conventions while also indulging in them.

I think it's time for me to give Vanquish a try. I know some people on the forum love it. I think I saw a cheap, 360 copy on ebay. A Japanese developed shooter might be more up my alley
