I said probably wrong. And it was mostly a joke post to begin with. I meant for it to somewhat hint back to my previous bitching over how I percieved so few to appreciate older styles of metal.

I still think its true though. I see more internet things about black metal girls than I do for 80's metal girls.

I posted a picture of Creed for shits and giggles expecting you all to riff on it for about 10 pages, and....nope. Not even one response mocking them at all.

I am highly disappointed.

Whether your conclusion is true or not is honestly irrelevant (though I seriously doubt there's much truth to it), it's your methodology that's highly flawed.

Joking and talking about your personal experiences is one thing, the mistake is when you then assume that those limited experiences are actually in any way representative of the whole. You don't really have any basis for those claims.

You know, I find it kinda amusing that for someone with pretty eclectic taste in general, you're pretty obsessed with labels and stereotyping people.

I doubt you neatly fit into any of the stereotypes associated with any of the things your'e interested in, so why do you assume anybody else does?

Who is Creed?

Sorry, we only listen to Deftones.

I'm having an issue with seeing how personal observation makes my methodology flawed, seeing as that is how science works. Science is based on the personal observation of the scientist in his experiment, and is backed up or denied by the personal observations of other scientist in the same experiment. And I think the majority of people base their views and beliefs on what they've seen or what the media directs them to, honestly.

I'm not sure about having "eclectic taste", as I have no idea what I like would be called eclectic. When it comes to labels and stereotyping, I do it because they wouldn't exist if they didn't hold some amount of truth.

I I'm not sure if I "neatly" fit into the stereotypes I would fit in, but I fit them pretty well. Hell, I'm a poster boy for that nerd/geek kid who gets made fun of in high school: red hair, acne, glasses, slightly overweight, low self-esteem.

No, no, no, no, no, no. You are conflating observation (measurements, data, etc) with anecdotes. Scientists don't base conclusions on personal anecdotes about things they've seen before, they base their conclusions on the results of controlled experiments and data gathered from careful observations.

The plural of "anecdote" is not "data."

I'm not sure about having "eclectic taste", as I have no idea what I like would be called eclectic. When it comes to labels and stereotyping, I do it because they wouldn't exist if they didn't hold some amount of truth.

The problem with this is that you're beginning with the premise that stereotypes are true in order to reach the conclusion that stereotypes are true. Circular reasoning.

One of the stereotypes associated with metal includes being heavily into drugs and alcohol, having long hair, being into the occult, and wearing leather. Do you do those things?

You're a stereotypical "nerdy kid?" Didn't you once admit that you've never bothered watching Star Wars?

I'm pretty sure "nerd" and "metal fan" aren't anywhere in the spectrum for a stereotypical fan of country and bluegrass music.

You really don't fit into any of those stereotypes as well as you think.

I somehow missed it when the Ildjarn / Hate Forest split dropped in October. Sick shit.

I'm going to skip over the first two bits, because you are right on those.

Drugs and alcohol? So far, as much as I can get my hands on, to be completely honest. Drank enough to get the spins like a son of a bitch on Halloween, puked all over my bedroom floor. Never been around anything worse than weed, but I've smoked when I've been given the option. Long hair? Would if my parents wouldn't beat the shit out of me or kick me out of the house. The occult? I think it is interesting, and I do a bit of reading, although I take much more of a dark interest rather than an interest in it for Satanism or Occultism or some such. Just as good stories or interesting reading. Leather? Got me there, but then again, Lemmy dresses like a Cowboy, now doesn't he?

Although I haven't watched Star Wars, the majority of people would call me a nerd based on appearance alone on the days I don't wear western shirts. Essentially how a stereotype works.

Being a fan of country, in my case, isn't really at odds with being a metal fan simply as it is the cultural music of my area. I imagine there are quite a few metal artists who are fans of their cultural music (folk/black metal anybody?), and haven't we discussed the fact that members of Obituary came from a country/bluegrass background?

I may not fit into the stereotypes as well as I think, but I am still a member of that group-even though being members of some of these groups mutually means that I can't be totally accepted in those groups.

And I'm still a fool who prefers metal without harsh vocals, so, despite what everyone else says, I still feel alone in that fact. I'm also one who doesn't like Black metal, so I have that missing factor also.

Most of your post is "I fit this and this, but not this" followed by maybe a "Hey look, this prominent figure doesn't fit the stereotype either!"

That's kinda my whole point.

So you don't fit the stereotypes then. Congrats, that's exactly the point I'm trying to make. You don't fit the stereotype at all neatly, why should you assume that anybody else does?

The thing is, you really aren't all that unique in that regard. In fact, I'd wager that the people who actually do neatly conform to the stereotypes associated with their hobbies and interests are actually a minority.

There's a reason why stereotypes are pretty much uniformly negative, and it has nothing to do with how true they are.

Whatever, I still stand by my point that stereotypes exist for a reason, and that I have yet to meet a girl who likes metal who isn't totally fucked up.

Have you ever met a girl, in general, who isn't "totally fucked up"?
