The Visitor

I watched this because of the bizarre cast(Lance Henriksen, Glenn Ford, Franco Nero, Shelley Winters, Sam Peckinpah, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Neal Boortz all in the same film? Sign me up!) as well as its being filmed and set in Atlanta. The city has changed a lot since 1978, but there was still quite a bit I recognized, and I can happily report that a man in the film is killed in his car by a parrot on a bridge very near to where I currently live. Beyond that, this movie is bizarre, a kind of scifi horror film about the battle between good and evil...or maybe space cops, I wasn't sure. It's really hard to describe this film.

Just know that an evil dude died but got a woman pregnant, and her little girl wants to get the woman pregnant again to birth a son, so the little girl can have incest sex with him and birth the evil dude again. Except an old man, a maid, and a bunch of bald guys are gonna stop it. At least, that's what Jesus said.

I'm not kidding, that was the plot. And it's completely serious.

Thriller - A Cruel Picture AKA They Call Her One Eye

This one came out several years before the likes of I Spit On Your Grave, but Thriller here is very similar to a rape-revenge film...except instead of just being raped, the woman in question is forced into prostitution, intentionally addicted to heroin, and mutilated for resisting. So she spends the next year training herself with all the money she can secure and then uses it to go on a killing spree of the people who kidnapped her...along with a couple of cops and a bunch of innocent motorists. This movie is violent, with the nastiest eye-slicing scene I've ever seen(the rumor is that it was an actual corpse), pornographic(literally, there is porn spliced in), and more than a little depraved.

Savage Streets

This is another sort of rape-revenge film, though the main character gets revenge for her sister being raped and her friend being murdered by a gang of drug dealing punks. It feels like a gritty cop drama, only set in and around a lawless high school with enough nudity to make any exploitation fan cheer. Also, it is very VERY PAINFULLY '80s. I enjoyed the violence, and once the revenge actually happens, Linda Blair does a great job of toying with the gang, but then the high school-style drama just feels laughable.

How good would it be for someone who hasn't seen the previous movies?

Quite honestly, it would be slightly helpful if you saw the first one because it brings back some characters and the "to-do list" from that, but you can still get the gist of it pretty well. I saw absolutely no references I could think of to the 2nd one at ALL. If you just saw the newest one, you'd be all right (and have a good excuse to see #1 if you haven't already)

A top-notch thriller with a kickass synth soundtrack for good measure. You don't mind an unoriginal premise or some plot holes when you're being entertained

2014's been another great year for film, but then again when was there ever a bad year? Hard to nail down dozens of titles into a small list, and even harder to keep track of worthwhile productions (unless you're a paid critic, ha).. still got movies from 2010 that I have yet to watch

The November Man

Eh...I like a good spy movie, but this twisted plot about retired-spy Pierce Brosnan trying to track down his lover's killer and ultimately discovering that the CIA started the Second Chechen War to ultimately convince Russia to join NATO is a bit...farfetched.

Also, why do all CIA field agents carry guns in movies, and why are they so willing to turn and shoot each other at the drop of a hat?

The Giver

This is a very visual movie, and I enjoyed both Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep. It does feel like it only skims the surface of the book, but I admit that I found its slow build of color effective, and I enjoyed how the memories were represented, sometimes as flashes, sometimes as something to be implanted into. That said, it's meant for a younger audience, and it might serve as a good way to get kids to watch Koyaanisqatsi.

The Professional. Been a while since I've seen it.

I could have sworn there was a scene where a kid made fun of Matilda for not inhaling while she's on the balcony. Another movie?

Could be National Lampoon's Vacation.
