I love Toriyama's character designs!
Now Tetsuya Nomura........ that's another story.

I'm willing to bet this is a majority opinion on Blue Dragon among the general populace. Toriyama kind of asks for it by never actually improving or growing as an artist. (Not that I'd imagine him caring, on top of his pile of money)ZenErik wrote:What mainly puts me off from Blue Dragon is the character designs from Toriyama. I hate his designs. I just started playing Phantasy Star Universe on my Xbox. I kinda feel obligated to give it a shot. I loved the series on the Genesis and this is actually my first Phantasy Star since playing PS 2 and 3. I found it rough to get into at first, but I find myself still being drawn to it after I get home from work.

Anyone I've ever talked to about this game had that same complaint. Its perfectly valid, I mean, if you don't like the art, its going to ruin a good portion of the game.sabrage wrote:I'm willing to bet this is a majority opinion on Blue Dragon among the general populace. If I wasn't raised on DBZ, I know I'd hate it. Its such a soap opera show, but nostalgia wins over objective analysis, so I freaking love DBZ. I also freakin love the music from IX. Take those two things and mash em together, and then acually make a hard game out of it...
And yet I got stuck at the first boss. I love the music at that boss, can hear it clear as day in my head as I type this... but he's so freakin hard! Its a good thing, but dayum.
Want to give the game some time, and pretty much anything by Mystwalker, just because I loved the psx FFs so much.
As it is, I am still playing Lost Odyssey. My big tv busted, so my only choice is to play this on a 20 inch crt, and the game (of course) has forced widescreen and fairly small text. Gah, I was really getting into it too.

Lost Odyssey is on my list after Atelier Totori and Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2. Just need to pick up a copy sometime.dunpeal2064 wrote:Anyone I've ever talked to about this game had that same complaint. I felt that Lost Odyssey's first boss was way more evil than Blue Dragon's first boss.

Yeah? They were both pretty tough. I don't know what it is about that BD boss, but he is just so evil. Can't even attack the face for like 2 turns, and then he is just about to kill me. Then again, I did not really do any leveling.MrPopo wrote:I felt that Lost Odyssey's first boss was way more evil than Blue Dragon's first boss.
I will say, Lost Odyssey is much more FF VIII in style, where as Blue Dragon has more of a FF IX feel, although more innocent. Sometimes I love following the stories of little kids though, brings a certain charm to the game. Then again, Odyssey does have twins like IV.
I just love pulling all the FF influence out of their games as possible. I was greatly surprised by LO so far though, really interesting story, although a fairly basic battle system.
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
I think the gameplay is what I wanted a little more out of from LO. It was pretty much straight up FFIX, ability learning system and all. Granted the difficulty was a tad higher, you could have 5 units, and I'll never tire of turn based combat... but yeah, it was just too bare bones or something? I got to the third disc and loved the story, but it never completely sucked me in. Maybe the linearity got to me as well. Not a complaint I have for any FF's from IX and down, but LO was pretty straightforward.
I still need to finish it one of these days though.

Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
My main complaint about a lot of today's RPGs is that they're TOO LONG. I know that might seem weird because a lot of people love RPGs for their length. But give me 10 - 40 hours. No more please. 50 absolute max.
None of that Persona 3/4 crap. Don't get me wrong, it's a great series, but 80 - 100+ hours is just too much... in my opinion, obviously.
