What was the last movie you've seen?

Agreed. Though this was a movie that everyone already knows they're either going to or are not. Lots of great stuff in here, and it does feel like the main story additions to the trilogy would be there if the Hobbit had been written after LotR, rather than before and shoehorned into the universe afterwards. The main thing that sticks out is the romance, but the same thing occurred in the LotR adaptation; Tolkein didn't do romance.
And while yes, Tolkien left a wealth of other stories out there, I don't think anyone really expects anything from Silmarillion or Unfinished Tales to be made into a big-screen movie.
You know what would be awesome? Silmarillion as an HBO miniseries like Band of Brothers. The novel itself would be very good for a serial format considering how each chapter is basically one slice of a several thousand year timeline.

You saw the 3 movies back to back?

I am planning to someday watch from the first hobbit to the last LOTR over an extended period of time. Am I doing this right?

Hoooooooooooly crap I was legitimately unaware of this (I haven't really bought any DVDs/Blurays in a very very long time)

Thank you for that.

Yes. At a theatre. Just like I did with LotR when RotK released. And actually, before they showed Five Armies, there was a very brief thing where they showed Peter Jackson being like "Thanks, you guys are awesome, etc etc" and commented that we (meaning the theatres doing this showing) were the first people in the world to see all three movies in a row then made a joking remark about "Now maybe you can watch all six movies... but that's for another day"

The only thing I could say to that is "Challenge Accepted!"... of course it'll be like 20-22 hours of movie (once Five Armies is out on DVD/BR)... I think I can do it though. It'll be fun in its craziness.

This is exactly what I wanted to happen to World War Z, yet instead we got a Brad Pitt-fueled CG mess. Just think, it could have been HBO's response to The Walking Dead...

It's a solid 19-20 hour block of actual film. Not including breaks or putting in the next disc or anything like that.

When the Return of the King EE came out, a friend I had at the time and I marathoned all the EEs. It took about 14 hours including minimal time to get food.

I haven't seen LOTR since.

To make the joke fair, wouldn't you also have to include read time for various sections of the ROTK appendix and Silmarillion?

Saturday was:
Rankin Bass Hobbit - DVD with added soundeffects from Laserdisc and Records
Hobbit 1 EE
Hobbit 2 EE
Fellowship EE
Two Towers EE
Return of the King EE disc 1

After that everyone was already asleep so I didnt put on disc 2. We started at 9 in the morning...

I get to see Hobbit 3 tomorrow night and am now suitably pumped.

When RotK EE came out it was finals week for us, so a bunch of my friends were camped in my dorm room while we marathoned. It was quite the experience. I keep wanting to do it again but I stop when I realize I could work on my backlog all day instead.

I do LotR EE marathon about every year and a half, two years. It's a fun time, though to be honest we're usually playing games or something at the same time because we've all seen them plenty of times before.

I marathoned the extended cuts of the LOTR films once and that was emotional, but I don't think I could watch these Hobbit films back to back. They are far too ponderous for my taste.
