Luckily I don't have to run for office, apparently I've been "accepted". And no worries, I checked gavelfactory.com and they have plenty of gavels on the cheap. I also have a meat pounder that looks like a huge shiny gavel, so I could make believe it's a gavel. My induction is tomorrow, so hopefully someone will be taking pictures.
What suit to wear? What tie to wear? Cufflinks or no? Tie clip yes, maybe pass on the cufflinks. Lapel pin? Ditch the watch? This is why I shouldn't drink coffee.
Congrats on the nomination! Is the position an advisory committee since there was no public election? Should be interesting, the banter over city issues while debating with your cohorts from different backgrounds.
Bring a sledge or even an engineering hammer to really make a statement. Just don't bust the table to get your point across.

Never. Cufflinks for sure. Might ditch the tie clip instead as I don't want to over accessorize....or wear a solid tie instead of a striped or argyle tie and keep the tie clip and the cufflinks. YE GADS! That's it! Tailored Tommy Hilfiger charcoal suit, solid sky blue tie (brings out my eyes), silver tie clip, french cuffs with silver "button" cufflinks.
Must have been the coffee talking.
Hmm. Belt buckle or clasp? Probably should go with a silver clasp.
Oh, and Jordan, you forgot spats. Got to have spats.

Pfft... Only second rate, non-stylish councilmen use cheap gavels from the internets. You need a locally made, hand-turned gavel to show that you have class. If you pay less than a grand you're doing it wrong.

Thanks duder! No public election, and this totally came out of the blue. I got an email yesterday from a councilman who wanted asked if I could meet him for coffee at 8am this morning. What I thought was a meet and greet was more of an awkward interview that I had not planned for. And I have zero clue about what my responsibilities are (I guess that's how city and state council's roll). Possibly not giving out small business loans?
I've been to meetings for years now and all I know is that a bunch of people sit around and say yay or nay based on their personal preference. But I'm naive about the whole process so I'm positive that actual work goes on behind closed doors.
Whatever happens, I'm really stoked. Hopefully one day I'll have one of those terrible portraits hanging up somewhere in town hall with me in a suit holding a NES Advantage.

Can you do it concurrently with your sales job?

You give me bad ideas. Like stealing a gavel from Williamsburgh, or tracking down Judge Ito's/Judge Judy/Judge Matthis gavel(s). Or I could could go LOTR style and have a gavel forged from the mines of Mordor/Hiddenite. One gavel to rule them all.

Just cheesy enough.
I started a thread a while back where we discuss and talk about local commercials
here because we sure have enough to go around

As far as I know there is zero conflict of interest. That said, I have lots of homework to do between now and tomorrow evening.

Protip: smoking crack will do more to improve your chances at an eventual mayorship than it would to hurt them.
Also, I expect you to be the one and try and fix all of NC's recent legislative and political problems.
