I've been playing this since we discussed it last week, and I finally beat it! SHMUPs aren't my forte, most definitely, but this one is a lot of fun and provides a lot of interesting variance in boss design, special weapons, and aircraft. Admittedly I didn't spend my time buying all the aircraft, but I did get the most expensive, with access to EVERYTHING. And then I used everything to take down the final bosses through level after level of entertaining(but at times very difficult) levels and boss fights.
U.N. Squadron isn't so difficult that a capable SHMUP player won't be able to beat it. But truth be told, I know I'm not one, so I have to practice and practice to get through a game like this. Some levels click, and I can get through relatively quickly. Others...well, not so much. And there's one boss in particular that I absolutely loathe. For those of you who have played the game, it's the one on the ceiling with the small target that can only be hit by special weapons. That fight royally sucked.
But getting there and through to the final boss was also a lot of fun, and there were times where I really felt myself enter the zone, where suddenly I was swinging past missiles and dodging bullets that I never even saw. Generally these experiences lasted long enough for me to realize I was in one and immediately screw up upon realization. But for a little bit there, oh, it was intense! I see why the SHMUP guys do it, because that is a thrill.
I recommend U.N. Squadron. It's gorgeous, it plays well, and its a lot of fun, despite it kicking my butt for a bit as I learned it(and grumbling extensively to my roommate about that one particular boss). And I'm glad to have beaten another SNES game!
