You watched at least one of the movies.

People: "Transformers is awful"

Me: So you heard it was awful but you still watched it?

People: Um, yes.

It gets even funnier when people say this:

People: Transofrmers was terrible.

Me: So I doubt you'll see the sequels.

People: Oh no. I'm definitely going to see the sequels so I have something to complain about.

People slay me. These same people watch the Twilight series.
 . I never watched another TF film again till I was forced to (at least it was pirated, so no money for bay), but I will admit I am guilty of that with the Harry Potter films.

"the films suck I hate them...ooh a new one is out, let's go watch it just in case this one ends up being good".....which, to the creator's credit, they did manage....in the final 2 films

The High Moon Studios games were rather good, much better than the movies, shame the studio stopped making more of them.

They are indeed. I think High Moon have been forced at gunpoint to do the last gen versions of the latest COD. Guess we'll never get a conclusion to the Cybertron story.

No, we know exactly how stupid his movies are. I refuse to watch anything with his name attached nowadays unless I have to.

And as for 300, visually it's stunning, but it does feel pretty hackneyed after a viewing or two. I remember seeing it in theaters and finding it awesome and then seeing it a year later and realizing just how underwhelming it was once the special effects wore off. I haven't had that happen with Sin City yet, but then Sin City is nearly a straight panel-to-film conversion of the comic book, so any place where it bogs down(and there are a couple where I cringe), I blame it on the source material.

Anyway, on to what I watched this weekend:

The Night of the Hunter

This movie is genuinely nightmarish, and I thought it was mostly wonderful as a result. There are some absolutely beautiful shots, and some excellent use of light and darkness, with wonderful performances from both Robert Mitchum and his child co-stars. At times there's a dreamlike quality, and Mitchum's Reverend Powell has a disturbing and sly ease that is riveting to watch. He's a true psychopath, manipulative, murderous, and devoid of empathy while carrying a personal relationship with a void in his head, "God." And he has quirks which further give away his mental illness, such as his compulsion to tell the story of his tattoos when they are noticed(and Mitchum definitely plays it as a compulsion, such as how he drops everything to tell the story the couple of times people look at his hands). And while a lot of what happens in this film won't phase the horror aficionados too much, the part where Mitchum vanishes in the light of the candle made my girlfriend scream.

If there's a weak point to this movie, it's in the beginning and ending, both of which feel rushed. The ending in particular feels tacked on, but neither section felt particularly good. It's obvious that the director wanted the film's focus to be the two children tangling with a psychopath, because both the lead up and the ending once he's been brought down just don't do the rest justice.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

I admit, I didn't find the first Hobbit movie nearly as riveting as the Lord of the Rings trilogy. For one, I didn't think the film should be turned into a trilogy, and for two, the focus felt different. The first Hobbit film, with its songs, humor, and heavy-handed CG, felt like a much more child-friendly adventure, and I left with the impression that the film had been meant for younger audiences and just wasn't for me. The second in the trilogy still bugs me for having a lot of extraneous exposition not in the book, but it definitely felt like a more mature film overall, and I found myself liking it more than the first even if I groan every time Legolas pops up and constantly compare everything to the 1970s animated version. I'm looking forward to the ending of the trilogy to see how things are wrapped up.

Man I love this film. This and Cape Fear made me realize how chilling Robert Mitchum can really be.

I was actually surprised by how good some of the dialog in War for Cybertron was. I actually laughed out loud at one exchange between the decepticons after a intense action sequence where one of them says something like, "Yeah! I can't believe we survived that" and Megatron gets snarky and says, "Yes. Your constant whining saw us through"

I think I actually enjoyed the Decepticon campaign more than the Autobots

Wait. What?

Burton is a target for satire and bad jokes, but I can't remember a time a note worthy critic named him a hack. Most of his films receive 4-star reviews across the board, so I'm totally amiss with this comment.

Please shed some light on this "A LOT of people call Burton a hack" stuff.

And not to piss in anyone's milk, but ya know what movie has more explosions than any MB movie? MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS. Count 'em.
You're asking me to play devil's advocate here, because I love Burton. "Note worthy critic"-Maybe not. One film maker in particular (and his legion of fans) makes a point of trash-talking Tim regarding an incident from years past. His name rhymes with Blevin Blith. It's really a shame, because I like his witty NJ dialog. I just wish he would stop inspiring so many internet trolls to trash Tim Burton.

Ya know what else MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS has? Witty whedon dialog, well developed characters, fun, a death scene that makes the audience care.

I'm not a Marvel guy in the first place, but I wasn't impressed with the Avengers at all. I wouldn't put it as low as I feel about the Transformers movies, but its only about a level above.

The Transformers stuff... I don't know. I do like them to an extent, but screwing up on how the fighting scenes are so hard to follow and the length of the newest one really drop my opinion of them. I never got into the Transformers as a kid though, so I don't have the ruined childhood aspect. They're just kinda meh to me- I see them with friends if they ask, but otherwise I ignore them.

I still like Megan Fox though. Not the best actor, but I like some of the stuff she's been in pretty well. There was one she did with Mickey Rourke that was really good, where she is an angel.

Kevin adores Burton. His "Burton Bashing" is simply Q&A filler to make a few jokes. FRANKENWEENIE and PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE are among his favorite films. BATMAN also blew his mind.

Smith also has no place to criticize any director.

Back on topic, I let my lady pick the movies we rent at video mart last night. She picked..

Rio 2

This one is from Blue Sky studio who made the Ice Age movies. Just like those movies, Rio 2 features a cast of celebrities voicing unlikeable main characters. The plot and character interactions take a note from Meet the Parents. All the different species of birds were colorful and well-represented. The saving grace of this film is Jermaine Clement as the villainous Cockatoo.

Verdict: Rent this if you have kids.

...and she also picked...

The Other Woman

I usually avoid chick flicks like the plague. This one wasn't so bad. It threw off the usual rom-com formula in favor of a female buddy comedy. Camron Diaz and Leslie Mann play two women who become friends after being wronged by the same man. Kate Upton joins the team during the second act, and the three friends plot a serious of humorous revenge schemes against the suitably narcissistic antagonist. This film was funnier than I expected, and had a few nice "girl power" moments.

Verdict: If you are forced to watch a chick flick, this is the one to watch.
