What's in the box set?
It's the samurai collection so it's Throne of Blood, Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and Sanjuro. Pretty tasty. It's has also pointed me towards stuff like Ikiru, Stray Dog and Drunken Angel.

In addition to Kurosawa's many famous "samurai" films, I also recommend Harakiri (1962), which is excellent, and if you are looking for something more modern, I recommend The Twilight Samurai (2002).
Thanks for the recommendations. I think Twilight Samurai is on Netflix so I'll give that a watch at some point and check out the rest. I dig that use of contrast and lighting.
I also have a Graham Greene boxset to get through as well, though I have at least seen Brighton Rock before. I'm not a total philistine.

Every single one of those is excellent, and Ikiru is a particular favorite of mine. I'd also recommend The Bad Sleep Well, and the somewhat disjointed but beautiful Dreams, but above all else, you should seek out Ran.
Ikiru is my very favorite film...so, yeah, you should see that one. Rashomon (1950) is another Akira Kurosawa classic that is incredibly influential and has held up incredibly well.

I personally like Hidden Fortress, many others posted Yojimbo as a good starter to disciver Kurosawa. Just dighest the movies one at a time, each a treat!
My wife and I watched a movie that has been out for a few years, slipped right by us.
Blindness
This movie is amazing. Imagine the whole world going blind one by one spread as if caught by a virus. The blind are cast aside and isolated, the fear of how the human race will survive. A neat twist is one that one person can still see, pretends to be blind to protect her blind husband in the isolation wards. World gone mad how one group hoards the food.
I think this is the first time I haven't liked a DC movie. While the premise was awesome, the story turns out to be pretty boring. Then I searched and read the comic issues it was based on. I guess it's not the film writer's fault, since the source material is so weak.
Also, for someone who's only followed Batman adventures through animation and the films, this was really striking
Is this how Batman acts in the comics? In the films/cartoon he would only use fear against criminals, and he would always show compassion and kindness. It's what always made him so appealing to me. Having to grow up/do heroics in such a cruel environment, and still be a decent guy (just saying, it's easier to be a boyscout when you are fighting against aliens ala superman)

Only in the hands of bad writers....
As for Damien's story, It's Grant Morrison. He has fantastic ideas, but his actual writing sucks. I actually preferred Son of Batman's take on Damien's story to the original comic book story since it removed so much of Grant Morrison's bullshit. I'm a less is more kind of guy and Morrison's stories are so convoluted and so full of pointless themes and obscure bullshit. He's almost like Hideo Kojimo in a way, another guy prone to excess.
Anyway, I quite enjoyed that movie, though there certainly are FAR better Batman animated movies out there. Under the Red Hood, Mask of the Phantasm, and Return of the Joker (uncut) are like my holy trinity.

The story was a bit convoluted at times, but this was an otherwise awesome movie. It has some flat out, badass action sequences, good writing and is just plain FUN. I was quite happy that despite Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D having already spoiled so much of the movie's major plot points for me, I still thoroughly enjoyed watching this.
And I watched it in 3D. It's post conversion, but I enjoyed it. I fully intend to watch it again in 2d. Honestly, I just need any excuse to watch this awesome movie again. I haven't really been a Marvel guy for many years now. I stopped buying Marvel comics some time after my college days and pretty much only follow DC now. That said though, I gotta admit, Marvel's killing it these days in the movie department. DC really needs to step it up, especially with Nolan no longer doing Batman

My brother and I saw it on opening weekend and then told our dad to hold off on Agents of SHIELD until he saw the movie (he was already behind by a couple weeks anyway, so he didn't mind).

I saw Cap 2 spoiled by AoS already, and still really dug it. I am very intrigued as to where they go with
Bucky Barnes, since we know now that Falcon is going to be the next Cap.
I have been on a Ouija board movie bender lately. I had a board going back to the late 90s, when they were made in the old style, not the new glow in the dark type you find at Barnes and Noble.
Witchboard series (on BR except 3 which hasn't gotten a transfer yet), Ouija Experiment and I am Zozo. Witchboard seems to be the only "good" ones. Though there is a new Ouija movie coming out, from Universal.
They have escaped into the mansion where they thought it was safe, yet.
