I haven't found any homebrew worth using. Most (but not all) PAL games can be played with a patch. You still lose a few lines of resolution, but it's better than nothing. Here's more info. I haven't tried any JP games yet.

For Shadow Colossus-ICO fans.
Luckily PAL ICO has a built in NTSC option. Thats the version to get.

So here's another question - how is emulation on the PS2? How easy is it to play Japanese or PAL imports? Any recommended places to get homebrew or other useful files?

There's a couple of emulators but nothing to write home about. Any game can be patched to load in ESR. I have loaded up an ESR patched NTSC copy of Fire Pro Wrestling Returns on my PAL PS2 with no problems.

Except for Sonic Unleashed, oddly enough.

it's almost 2011, and with all of the outdated and irrelevant information in this thread and online as a whole, i'm confused about free mcboot. so...

this is what i want to do: run ps1 ISOs from a USB thumb drive on my slim ps2 (SCPH-70012) without a modchip, swap magic disc, or cheat device

i understand i will need free mcboot installed onto a ps2 memory card. but i have questions:
-do i also need to install usb advance?
-do i still need to block the sensors under the disc drive lid?
-do i need to have an original game disc to swap everytime i want to play a game?
-will i be able to use the memory card for saving ps2 gamesaves after using it to install free mcboot?

any help would be appreciated. perhaps a detailed article on the main page would be a great idea as well :)

Freemcboot is just a method to boot to an alternative screen (additional options other than the usual browser/configuration). There is no support to play PS1 ISOs until PS2PSXe (PS1 emulator for PS2) is out. Currently it's still work in progress, only a CLI public preview exists last I checked.

Not possible, not without disc swapping. FMCB exploits the DVD player on the PS2 so only DVDs are compatible. You can't boot PSX games using FMCB, you can't boot CD based PS2 games either, they must be converted to DVD and patched with ESR. You can't convert PSX games to DVD and have them boot either. Simply put, it's a pain to boot PSX backups on PS2, still. This link explains the possible methods of booting PSX backups:

I'd like to add a couple of my own questions to this. How do I tell if a game is CD based? If I have a PS2 fat I can boot games from a HDD? Is there a list of compatible HDDs somewhere so I don't waste money buying the wrong one? And finally: Do I have to have the PS2 Network Adapter in order to install a HDD? I have one, I'm just curious on that part.
