Even as someone who's been collecting NES games for years, the NES Classic appeals greatly to me. I have a nephew and an 8 year old cousin who I have always wanted to share and play NES games with, but I don't have the courage to hand over my retro collectables to young kids!! This is a perfect solution. 8 year olds can handle hooking up usb and hdmi and the NES controller is about as user friendly as it gets! Not to mention the fact that my older siblings and friends have also been asking about the Classic system as well!
So here's my question, I own the original Nintendo Player's guide and I read it cover to cover over the years... I've had the urge to read up more on some NES titles (tips, tricks, maps, development, history) and come across two new books.
The first one 'Playing With Power: Nintendo NES Classics' as far as I can tell is officially licensed by Nintendo, and published by Prima (really?) on sale right now on Amazon for like $27. The other book I found, 'Ultimate Nintendo:Guide to the NES library' is by Pat Contri and seems considerably more thorough, but is also about $60.
Has anyone had an eye on either of these books, or know of any other good NES books? Or have any idea of the quality? I don't much follow Pat the Punk, so I'm not sure what to expect as far as quality over all, but I'm not so sure about Prima's 'official' book either.
Thanks!!

He knows plenty, so do many others with a sliver the attention whoring and egomaniacal behavior.

Thanks man! That's the vibe I got from the video I saw on YouTube. Anyone else have an opinion on these books?Exhuminator wrote:Pat Contri knows NES like no one else I know. Get his book.
Also, I have been wondering which of the 30 games I'm gonna start with?! Save states will make everything so much more player friendly, so I'm pretty excited for that. I'm probably going to start with 2 or maybe 3 games and then wait till I finish one off before I start any more.
I'm thinking I'll start with Super Mario Bros 2, Metroid, and some Double Dragon 2 for when my friend comes over!

Ha ha, yeah. I'm not much of a fan of Pat's attitude or weirdo personality either, but he really does know his stuff about NES. (Although I wouldn't consider him a Famicom expert.)Tanooki wrote:He knows plenty, so do many others with a sliver the attention whoring and egomaniacal behavior.

After a one on one a couple friends of mine out west had with him some years ago, I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't on some watch list for stalking or some other predatory nature list.
Sure he knows a lot, so do quite a few others including myself. Most don't need, seek or want that desperate level of attention.

Except you guys haven't wrote a book about NES yet, but he has.Tanooki wrote:Sure he knows a lot, so do quite a few others including myself.
When you write your book, maybe I'll recommend it instead of his.

I've wanted to do this for a long time, actually. We should band together and make one. We've got the knowledge, at any rate.
Re: NES Classic
This is what I'm hoping happens NES mini does great, next we see in this order SNES mini> NES mini mini > SNES mini mini > novelty worn off.
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

Re: NES Classic
A man can dream...
NES Classic II - Consists of top 50 3rd party games, including all the best Konami, Capcom, and Sunsoft stuff.
SNES Classic - Consists of top 50 SNES games, half first party, half third party.
Game Boy Classic - Handheld shaped like original Game Boy, except lithium ion battery and quality OLED screen, comes with 100 best GB games.
Game Boy Color Classic - Same as above, but a 50 game library is fine.
Game Boy Advance Classic - Same thing as the last two, except top 75 games sounds about right.
N64 Classic - A mini console like the NES / SNES would be, a top 30 would be fine for this one.
I would buy all of it. ALL OF IT
Know what else I dream of? A handheld PS2 with OLED screen that plays DVDs and supports reading ISOs off an internal flash drive. I WOULD PAY SO MUCH DOLLAHS It could be shaped like the Vita mostly.
