I know what he means. Happens to me in the pickems when I dont pick say the Texans to win. I want them win because they are my team, but id also want them to lose so my pick is correct.dsheinem wrote:How do you conceptualize these as different? rooting≠picking
pulling≠picking
I don't think it is just semantics, as picking implies some kind of "best educated guess" as opposed to "pulling" and "rooting" which both imply something like "hoping".
Re: The 2013 NFL Season Thread
Rooting for 49's implies I wish them luck as a fan.
Pulling for the Packers to win implies I want them to win the game.
I didn't say, "I'm rooting for the 49's to win" just that I was rooting for them. Just because I applauded the 49's on every first down doesn't mean I want them to win.

No, but once I had picked them, I want them to lose so I will earn a point. But I am also rooting for them to win because they are my team.

But I also disagree with Luke. I dislike the 49ers. I can't stand Harbaugh or Kaepernick.

Ok, so you picked the Pack to win, but wanted the 49ers to win from the perspective of a fan/supporter. That is much different than pulling for one and rooting for the other, which, again, are basically synonymous terms.Luke wrote:dsheinem wrote:

Re: The 2013 NFL Season Thread
But by picking them to win, you rationally want them to win. But your heart is still rooting for your favorite team to win. But since one did pick the other team, you are now pulling for them for personal gain.

Yes. I cheered for the 49's but was pulling for a Packers win.
My heart and my wallet are not the same.
