The drum n bass lessons continue, but now we enter the ragga jungle. The beats grow wild here with percussive insanity, the bass bobs in all rich and fat with dub, and the patois spittin rastas are out in force. Bumboclaat!

This is the roots of drum n bass, buried deep underground, but full of musical nutrients for healthy rudeboys.

Starting with a little history, we've got Congo Natty and Remarc from the early days. Original Nuttah is included for likely being the most popular song in the genre, then Tester rips it apart with "Live Longer" as we go down into the underground with some of the best ragga junglists the genre has to offer. Much respect to Rhygin for running ragga-jungle.com for so many years.

Drumfunk. Edits. Choppage. Call it what you want, it's the subgenre of drum n bass that focuses on detailed and highlighted edited/chopped up drum patterns twisting and turning their way through a light ambient haze.

So you have checked out all of those Enduser tracks I've posted, right? A lot of his stuff is similar, like End of a Beginning.

Yeah, Enduser is great. Generally, I don't usually classify him as drumfunk since he doesn't focus as much on atmospheric ambience. His drum edits are certainly complex and funky, though often heavy and distorted. The rest of his instrumentation tends to be hard edged and tech heavy rather than airy and fluid, which seems important to the drumfunk sound. But Enduser is versatile and "End of a Beginning" is an exception to my general impression of his music. And really, it's all breakbeat and these subgenres get silly after awhile, despite their utility for finding similar kinds of music.
