I still have not played Shenmue 1 or 2, so please don't spoil anything.... but my question is... Did Shenmue 2 finish on a cliffhanger or something that will make room for Shenmue 3? Or did they pretty much finish the story with 2 and Shenmue 3 will feel forced?

Total cliffhanger. Shenmue was planned to be pretty long. The story was supposed to be over 10 chapters (16 is a frequently cited number, but I believe they shortened it from that), and the first game covered chapter 1, while the second game covered chapters 2-5. A third or even fourth game might still not have finished it off.
Having said that, part of the reason fans are all so excitable about a sequel is that we've had blue balls about the story for the past 10 years.
I've always felt that I'd be satisfied to have the series concluded as a novel or something, anything to get the rest of the story told, and I've heard the same from a lot of other people. New games would of course be preferable, but hey...
Not that it matters at this point, unfortunately.

Yeah the thing that drives shenmue fans crazy is how Shenmue 2 ended. I won't ruin things, but everything just gets turned on it's head and is mindblowing.
I find that a lot of people who criticize the series never got to that point.

Thanks for the posts. I didn't want to research in in order to avoid spoilers.
I guess the best thing to do is do a book or graphic novel. I've seen articles saying the plot details have been revealed.
Though, I get the feeling that they are saving Shenmue 3-5 for the Dreamcast 2.

No need to increase sales of Nintendont, CrapBox, and SleepStation consoles.
I'm not sure if I'm going to play it now. I would go insane waiting years after a cliffhanger.

The plot details that were revealed seemed common knowledge as it was eluded to in the games themselves. Trust me, it does not even remotely talk about the revelations of the ending and what that means for the rest of the series. I say play it and experience it. Shenmue 1 may seem like a chore, but it is the prologue to an amazing story.

+1, to that as well as 1...i don't see it as chore-like but i haven't revisited it since launch, so it may feel that way now. it's definitely a slow-paced prologue, sad that too many didn't get to play 2 after it.

Not be too picky but game 1 was chapter 1. Game 2 was chapter 3 - 6. Chapter 2 was left untouched & shown in unlockable context in Xbox version (a comic strip). We can't really be certain what was planned after chapter 7 but 16 was the original intent... no necessarily 16 games.

To be fair, I'm 99% certain in the Dreamcast version, the chapters are labelled chapter 2-5. We may as well pretend the "real" chapter 2 doesn't exist, since it was cut from the game.

3. The Rapture
2. Shenmue 3 gets released
1. Firefly is renewed
in that order of things that humanity wants but will never get.
