2012 Together Retro Calendar
Re: 2012 Together Retro Calendar
Lost Levels is alright, it really almost does feel like a fanmade romhack though lol. Nice to see SMB2 (US) get some love around here, because I think it's a great game on its own and obviously pretty unique compared to SMB1 and SMB3.

The lost levels are just incredible, devilish and the pinnacle of 8-bit platforming.
I also don't like how it has been dubbed the "lost levels" since the game is actually the true SMB2. What we got in the US was the watered down pallet swap.
honestly. We have to go through this again. When Super Mario Bros 2 (Doki Doki Panic) came out in the US, it was called Super Mario Bros 2. We (the masses) didn't know about "lost levels" until the 16-bit iteration, which was re-dubbed... Lost Levels. Why would we then stop calling the game we all grew up playing and knew as SMB2 "SMB2"?
You don't have to change any of your current habits. Just pointing out that the "lost levels" is in fact the true Super Mario Brothers 2. It was created with the intention of being the sequel to SMB1 and was released as such in Japan.
Instead of getting that game in the US, they took a different game (Doki Doki Panic), tweaked it and called it SMB2. But you already know this. So why should the actual SMB2 game be renamed something silly, while the imposter game retains a false title? I guess it is a pointless argument, but there are some precedents for it. FF IV & VI are seldom referred to anymore as their SNES incarnations of FFII & III. Numerous rereleases have also served to reinforce these corrective elements.
The solution? None really, just give props to the lost levels by referring to it as SMB2 (J).

But it depends if you're playing FF games now and/or are a FF fanboy. Remember that we're a special bunch here. If you talk to someone who only played the FF games back then or read game magazines and 'grew out' of games, then they'd have no idea what you're talking about. Same thing with the SMB games. If you ask the average westerner about SMB2 as opposed to someone like those of us here, they're going to refer to the vegetable tossing game.
Unfortunately it's just a mess that can't really be undone. Westerners are generally going to refer to it as Lost Levels or SMB2 J and Easterners will refer to ours as SMB2 USA

And for the record, I still see a handful of people around here refer to the SNES FF's as FFII and FFIII ...
Definitely gets a little confusing in discussion at a glance sometimes.

Isn't that the truth? I still call the NES a "regular Nintendo". I doubt I'm the only one here that does that.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Re: 2012 Together Retro Calendar
Hmmm...... First time I've ever even looked into this Together Retro thing. So this is when everyone plays the same game during a specific month and discusses it on the boards? I'm down for a few of these.
Jan - Golden Axe Warrior
Expensive as hell! Anyone object if I emulate this? Is that, like, against the rules? Maybe I'll track down one of those Sega Collections.
Feb - Soul Calibur 1
I've always wanted to try this but I suck at fighting games, maybe I'll snag a copy before February.
Mar - Y's I
I love this game, I own the DS version. I'd like to track down either a SMS or PC-Engine version before the March though.
May - Wolfenstein 3D
I actually own this complete with the maps and everything else. Should be a good time.
July - Treasure Heroes 2 Pack - Guardian Heroes and Gunstar Heroes
Can't see myself doing this one unless I emulate or find some inexpensive import.
August -Bomberman 94
Maybe I'll import this.
Sept - Super Mario Brothers 2/Doki Doki Panic
Use a FDS emulator for DDP, play the cart of SMB2. Great game!
November - Panel de Pon
Maybe import?
December - Do Don Pachi
Maybe import?

import? Why? It's on just about every single Nintendo console in some shape or form.

Same here. And an Atari 2600 is simply an "Atari".

Oh! I didn't know it was Tetris Attack. You guys are being too cryptic for me.
