so, if there a way to play PS1 isos yet? Via a 3rd party emulator, or using Sony's own emulator?

There is no emulator.

PS1 games are and have always been played via hardware just like all BC on the PS3.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

Great progress so far! As a former owner of a xbmc oXbox, I am excited to continue that on my ps3. I will definitely let some time pass until most of the kinks are worked out. Looks like I'll be investing in a bigger HDD sometime soon.

Uh...

Ps1 b/c on the ps3 has always been software. That's why Sony didn't take it out of the newer models.

No, they took the PS2 out, but left the PS1 components in.

When you see board comparison pics you can still see the PS1 cpu on the main board. In the PS2 it was used as the IDE controller for the hard drive, but I don't know if it serves a purpose other than just PS1 BC in the PS3.

After all the PS1's CPU and other small parts cost under $5 to manufacture these days. Taking into account the disc drive or most of the other hardware that is no longer needed thanks to it just using the PS3's infrastructure it's a no brainer.

It's the PSP where it's always been software.

I'm sure we'll have PS1 'ISO' loading soon. We won't need to emulate the PS1 since it's already supported in all models of PS3 anyway. We just need to intercept the syscalls to redirect to files on the hard drive instead of on the disc. Same way that backup loading works with PS3 games. Interestingly when playing in PS1 mode certain PS3 features still work like playTV recording, background downloading. So it's not a completely different mode like PS2 backwards compatibility (nothing else works, just PS2, no background download etc). So I'm sure it would be easier to get working 100% than the state of PS2 backup loading with multiman at the moment.

In the course of dismantling many a PS3 in the last year they've all had the Plastic topped PS1 chip identical to that inside the Slim PS2's.

Granted I've only taken apart fat PS3's at this point, but It's been inside of the 40gb and the 160GB I've helped people tinker with & repair, and inside my own 60Gb (though the 60GB doesn't count as it has the PS2 itself inside).

Actually, there IS a PS1 emulator for the PS3: http://www.ps3-hacks.com/2010/11/29/ps3sx-released-psx-psone-emulator-released/
Also, a firmware patch was just released for 3.55 CFW that allows LV.2 Peek and Poke syscalls, so a new backup manager should be appearing shortly!

I hear that the emulator is kind of shoddy.. Anywho I mainly want to run a mame and a Saturn emulator along maybe with a similar CPS III emulator I have on my PC for the SF III series... I think I want a fat ps3 to run it though, so I think I'll be searching for one second hand in the coming months.. Plus SACD and BC to PS2 is already intriguing as well.
