Splatterhouse is an ultra-violent and super difficult Altered Beast type game where instead of morphing you receive weapons. The gore factor is a 10 out of 10, the bosses are disgusting, and the backgrounds are a tad disturbing...so it's terrific.

Now on to the rest of the series.

Good man! I'm planning to revisit all four again next month, time permitting.

Are you totally against emulation, Luke? I assume you have no Famicom, but you REALLY should play Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffitti at some point. That game is so many kinds of awesome.

Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffitti looks incredibly fun. The Thriller scene had me cracking up, and it seemed like a Mini Final Fight version of Splatterhouse (which is a great thing).

But yeah, I'm not into emulation.

I spent most of the game spooked because a giant, creaky, empty house during a thunderstorm freaks me out. But really it's a well-written story about coming of age and family relationships told through notes, invoices, letters and pamphlets from the year while your character was abroad.

And that's all I'm going to say. It only took me about 2 hours to get through and I really enjoyed it.

Really really want this!!! Would you say it's worth the asking price? $20 is pretty high for a 2 hour experience. I paid $15 for Journey and don't regret it though.

21. *NEW* 8 Eyes - NES (September 13)

8 Eyes has been completed. Since this is a game not many have played, even completed, my goal as far as playing NES games will be to take a look back at those titles that didn't receive a lot of recognition or discussion, whether they were good or bad. Those games that I feel fall into that category will be highlighted in red. Think of it as something like "Exed vs. NES".

Image
This is the last "tea break" with the final boss, a female, no less. This is how every stage ends, get used to this!
So onto 8 Eyes. At first glance, it could easily be a Castlevania rip off. The design, items, and enemies are all similar. But our hero Orin brings his falcon Cutrus to the fight, to attack enemies, find clue scrolls and hidden items, and to hit door switches that Orin cannot get to.

Even though this game has the look and feel of a classic series down, make no mistake, this game has just enough to be special. An important thing to remember is to not hit enemies head on, back off to let them attack first and when they finish, move in and use your sword to attack. It also features a Mega Man style set of stages that MUST be followed, for each completed stage powers up your sword enough so that the next boss in line in the correct order can go down faster. As you clear each stage, you receive one of the 8 Eyes (jewels) for a special puzzle at the end of the game. Each stage has a clue scroll that tells you where each jewel goes in the puzzle. The final stage, the House of Ruth, is your typical boss rush with separate rooms for each one, but it is made easy by completely refilling your health and item meters after each fight as well as a special hidden item in each room that will also restore your health and item meters if you are running low.

After the previous bosses and the final boss are beaten, the jewel puzzle is presented. Using the clue scrolls obtained from the previous stages, you must correctly place all 8 jewels in each spot. Once that is solved, the game is finished, but then you are told of a second (and even a third) quest, in which the enemies move faster and are tougher to beat.

If you're a fan of Castlevania, I'd have you check this out. Look for more NES games to appear on my list in the near future.

Hey Exed,

Would you say 8 Eyes is closer to Castlevania or Faxanadu? I think it's time I pick this game up.

I have no idea how much Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffitti costs, but Famicom games aren't that hard to play on an NES (it's way easier if you have a top-loader though).

I got my first Famicom game the other week (Romancia) and had it up and running with a Gyromite converter within minutes.

Sweet. I have a top loader and an FC3+, so maybe it will play it as well. Thanks man!

Yeah a FC3+ will work too. I lack a top loader, so I actually found the clone system easier to use than my toaster.

Do you have a pin converter though?

Let me tell ya, a lot of guides don't mention this but the Gyromite converters are a wee bit too large for Famicom games until you shave a couple of millimeters off one of the sides. I used the same metal file I used to remove the tabs in my SNES (to play Super Famicom games). 8)

I AM THE PAN!

Based on the entertaining Peter Pan film starring Robin Williams that came out over 20 years ago(oh God, really?), this platformer has a lot of charm in its visuals. It's not too long, coming in at only 10 levels, and these offer a fair bit of variance: a snow level, a couple of underground cave levels (including one in which a floating enemy flame is the only light source), a side scrolling stage through the tree tops while another level has a side scrolling section with mermaids, and so forth. Most levels terminate with a boss fight, though for the most part these aren't too hard. And then game ends with a pair of sword duels against Captain Hook! It's cute, it's colorful, and I had a blast playing it, apart from a couple of problems I had.

First, the controls felt a bit stiffer than I would have liked. More than once I found I couldn't turn around and attack as quickly as I needed to, and holding the attack button to run or fly swiftly was a pain at times. The controls were a much bigger problem during flying sequences where precise control was needed. And the game's hitboxes appear to be slightly larger than the sprites, so there were a few times where I'd get hit despite not actually touching an enemy. Also, dashing everywhere is required, since many enemies match your walking speed and your post-hit invincibility is very short. A couple of bossfights I managed to lose in just a few seconds because I would touch the boss and then never successfully escape.

That said, the game is short and visually very pleasing. The platformer fans amongst us would likely enjoy it a good bit, though they could probably beat it in a day without too much difficulty.
