I agree.

It is cheap enough console as it is. The thing is, on the surface it doesn't because it is competing with the slashed down 360 and PS3, when it is on a shelf come Christmas next to the PS4 and Xbone, it's price will appeal to a lot of parents.

I agree with this. It is no surprise that older consoles are outselling it when they have been out long enough to have a lower price and a generations worth of games already out. I am extremely curious to see how well the PSbone sale. If numbers are lower than a lot of people are expecting then we will know this is just a general trend and if not, well, whatever I guess. As long as Nintendo pulls in a profit and continues to make games and their own hardware I am satisfied. Of course I am sure that Ninty themselves want to make as much money as possible as a company. If they aren't making a profit I have no idea what to say. I guess 'better luck next time'. I do not think a more power and samey console will help them in the slightest though. It is pretty clear a lot of third parties just do not want to release software for Nintendo consoles.

A bit off topic but not really. I think for their next console they should just combine their systems. A tablet sized dual screen system that you can take on the go or hook up to your TV and use traditional controllers with. With all their resources focused on one system there would be a constant stream of A+ games.

*Sorry double post. For whatever reason I was thinking it would just add itself to my previous post if no one posted in between.

I agree with Ziggy and MrPoPo , if that graph shows anything is that the NIntendo Wii U is going to have a surge in sales very soon. Explains why Nintendo is not so sorry worried probably. What I do not understand is why do people wait a complete 12 months and then go crazy buying the console by next November?
I know its probably for the holidays but moving units from 300k to 1.4m is unheard off. Its like everyone got his paycheck in November.
I also like how that shows the N64 is second best selling console after the Wii , and they called it an all time low for Nintendo. Its really unappreciated . Low GC sales still a mystery to me.

As for a price drop, I can't tell how much it costs Nintendo to build these consoles so I am not sure how much of the price can they drop for an already low priced console. I am extremely surprised that the PS4 is only $50 more, when you think the PS4 packs in much more GBs of storage, much more powerful hardware, and a bluray drive. Its either Nintendo is greedy or the tablet controller is expensive to manufacture. Then again, if the Wii U hardware is just slightly better than the 360s 2005 technology, shouldn't it be cheaper? That was the case with the Wii , it was only slightly more powerful than last gen and it was $250 at launch.

I think a price drop will increase sales but don't you think that if the consumers hears of this new console that sold so bad they had to drop the price on it , it will just push him further from the buying decision thinking is the "bad" console?
I think it will give a bad rep.

@Fastbilly

Yes. I can prove this. People who buy these games buy them because they are fans of the sport not the games. I can prove this. Look at sales of Madden outside the US . Why is it not selling just as well in the USA? On the opposite , check the sales of PES in the USA . Why is it not selling just as much?
Also , these game sales are very low IMO . Ranging from 5-6m only, I thought those sold like crazy.

Sony and Microsoft tend to sell their hardware at a loss and hope to make up for it with game sales. Nintendo likes to make a profit.

So unless you own Nintendo stock, you should be angry at them.

They sold the 3DS for a loss for about a year, I didn't see that hurting them. Quite the contrary it has a large enough install base now for developers to support it, and we finally have a bunch of heavy hitters coming out (seriously, 2013 is like the year of the 3DS. If you don't count the PC, no other platform can compare to the range of new releases it has to offer)

I also feel the 3DS at the start has the same issue the WiiU had, an identity one. When it was doing poorly, a lot of people pointed toward the fact that many people thought it was just another update to the DS (similar to the DSi), but as time went on it become more apparent.

Hopefully the same thing happens with the Wii U.

When the manufacturer sells a console at a loss, how many games does each console buyer has to buy before the manufacturer starts to profit?

In simpler terms, how much does the manufacturer makes on each game sold for their system?

I imagine it's different for every system, or maybe even every game.

But this is telling. Wii U profitable with just one game sale, Nintendo reveals

It's harder to find numbers for the PS3, since its price and hardware have both changed dramatically.

As far as i can tell 3DSXL's make very little profit for sears.

I use a computer there and theres a program that tells the store cost of an item.

3DSXL cost the store $191 and change.

They are sold everywhere for $199

Eight bucks is shitty profit.

More money is definitely made on the software

Between $8 and $10 is the average store profit on a $59.99 new game.
