Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Which the move to handhelds is welcome in my book. I hate playing rpgs on consoles. Especially since with playstation the vita's battery isn't phenomenal so remote play is meh. Yeah it's gone back to niche but they aren't anywhere near dead. I just wish Japan wouldn't keep so many of them and that maybe there were japanese culture classes to take to understand the games. I'd take one a heartbeat if it meant more games coming over if I had the money....
@Ack IKR? They must be looking at the xbox. I'm sorry but I've never known that system to be known for rpgs. Playstation(4, 3, and vita) and 3DS are rpg powerhouses last I checked. Though I wish nintendo hadn't region locked the 3DS. I know it's possible to undo it but I'm on the verge of sending mine off for repairs first. Especially since on DS games at least they act like they eject and it's weird.
@alienjesus not really, they're just niche. LIke a lot of japanese culture over here. It's sad that it's become like that...

I used to wish I knew Japanese so I could play all those JRPGs we missed. Now, we've got so many of them translated that it's a non-starter. Plus, many weren't as good as advertised, and I doubt I'll ever get through all the ones we did get anyway.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I wish there were a way to play Saturn and Playstation Japanese games with English patches like on the Retron 5. I know I could emulate, and I know that's technically what the Retron 5 does, but I'm really particular about using original games and original controllers. I prefer to use original hardware, too, but I'll make exceptions if it allows for translation patches. A straight emulator, though, is too much for me. Damn my extremely picky gaming habits.Sarge wrote:I used to wish I knew Japanese so I could play all those JRPGs we missed. Now, we've got so many of them translated that it's a non-starter. You may want to get a modded Saturn. That's how I play, and I patch and burn ISOs for play on the system. The drive is much less finicky than the PSX's. It also bypasses some of the emulation issues with SSF and Saturn. That's a great emulator, but it's still not quite there with some games.
That being said, you could probably find a PSX and do the same thing. Or get one of those SD card ISO loaders. I toyed with getting a Rhea for the Saturn, but there weren't any in stock and it's expensive.
They sold Dual Shock adapters for the PC, I have a few myself and they're pretty nice overall. One of them that I have is a combo PS2/Gamecube/XBOX adapter.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I actually think JRPG's are doing fine and having a bit of a resurgence on consoles. We got a new Star Ocean, Tales is all over the place, 10 years later and FFXV has finally arrived, I believe the next Dragon Quest is console bound, even the next Y's is, etc. Yeah it's not the SNES/PSX era, but things seem to be on an upswing to me. Even though the PS3 does have a lot when you dig around.
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Perhaps. Too bad the new Star Ocean is apparently pretty blah. What happened, tri-Ace? What happened?!

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Wait, wait, the next Y's might come to console?
I haven't touched any of them yet, but I'm really interested in the series, it being an ARPG. I think one of the biggest things that keeps me away from JRPGS is the fact that so many of them are turn based.

Yup, pretty sure it's coming to PS4 and Vita.
Also, despite what I might have said earlier, I just gave in and ordered a few more Super Famicom RPGs.
Dragon Quest III, Dual Orb II, Glory of Heracles IV, and Treasure Hunter G for $22.98 shipped.
