Oh man I remember the shitstorm that followed the Pabich/Rolfe scam.
So the carts are finally out now, huh?

Re: Video Game "Look what I found"
He didn't fix the glitch? Wasn't that the point of the reproduction? That is something worth getting angry about. Since people spend $60 on terrible games all the time, however, I do not see any point in getting worked up about Yoshi's find. If it makes him happy, then I think it is great.o.pwuaioc wrote:Which makes it all the worse, since a) Pabich didn't fix the glitch, and b) the repros aren't worth but exactly the price of a repro. For the money Yoshi spent, he could have had a fixed copy of the game made.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Calm down everyone. Cheetahmen II: The Lost Levels is a repro cart, and its creation was funded through a Kickstarter campaign:

It cost $60, and while I did not order one, I would be happy that my game arrived safely if I contributed to the campaign.
(Full Disclosure: I enjoy (ironically) collecting terrible games, and I was ecstatic when I found a copy of Bebe's Kids (SNES) in the wild. I would love to add a copy of Cheetahmen II (NES) to my collection, but it is a bit out of my price range at the moment...)

I'd probably put "scam" in quotes there. I'm still not sure what people were throwing a fit about with that thing.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Oh man I remember the shitstorm that followed the Pabich/Rolfe scam.

It wasn't worth throwing a fit over, but was certainly questionable.AppleQueso wrote:I'd probably put "scam" in quotes there. I'm still not sure what people were throwing a fit about with that thing.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Oh man I remember the shitstorm that followed the Pabich/Rolfe scam.

They claimed to be "fixing" the game, even though a fix already had existed for some time.
And in the case of someone like Pabich, I make a point not to donate money to people who just can't resist showing off how much money they already have.

The stuff thrown at Rolfe was pretty straight up unfair. Rolfe had almost nothing to do with the project, he just appeared in a promo video for the kickstarter.BoneSnapDeez wrote:It wasn't worth throwing a fit over, but was certainly questionable.AppleQueso wrote:I'd probably put "scam" in quotes there. That's a fair point, he probably didn't know what he was getting into.

Re: Video Game "Look what I found"
So...basically...Cheetahmen II: The Lost Levels ended up just being an expensive NES repro cart produced by someone who (a) did not actually correct the glitch in the game himself but (b) is the only person legally entitled to make Cheetahmen II reproduction carts.
To me at least, this is kind of a wash...I can understand people getting upset that the final product was just an expensive reproduction cart based on a ROM hack. At the same time, however, the guy does own the rights to Cheetahmen II, and he is entitled to make some money off of its notoriety. Using Kickstarter to fund his business venture probably goes against the "spirit" of the crowd funding, but since it is doubtful he would have received funding from any other source, it is unlikely the games would have been created otherwise.
EDIT: Also - given the cost of actually making the things - he probably did not end up making much (if any) money on the endeavor.

A number of people, although thankfully not too many, opted for some of the rewards, which would indeed have added to his profit margins.prfsnl_gmr wrote:EDIT: Also - given the cost of actually making the things - he probably did not end up making much (if any) money on the endeavor.

Yeah, it was $60. I don't know when I'll get around to playing it as I don't have an NES up here at school, but I'll be sure to do something for it.CRTGAMER wrote: @ Yoshi - Nice Find even though the game has a bad reputation for being a crappy set of games. Have care, the cart connector might be a little thicker then a 1st party NES cart.
60 bucks or how much and maybe a full review of the different games?
And I understand how you guys are going off on it, but really, I don't play that many games anymore for the most part and wanted something I could laugh at once in a while. In addition, I'd probably have never gone along with this if I hadn't previously met Pabich; I met him at Midwest Gaming Classic last year and he seemed like a pretty nice guy. Lots of cool stories surrounding Active and what happened.
I understand if you guys wouldn't want a ROM hack, but y'know, whatever. It gives me something to talk about gaming-wise that doesn't relate to arcade games for once.

Re: Video Game "Look what I found"
It makes more sense to me to own a Cheetahmen II cart than a box/manual for ANY game, and plenty of people here would pay top dollar for a case that will sit on their shelf, and don't get any remarks like Yoshi is. At least Yoshi can PLAY Cheetahmen II.... up to the 2nd 3rd level at least
I personally find the shitty NES games quite entertaining. The Karate Kid, for example, is hilarious to play, as the game is just downright unfair. I'd never get rid of it, and it doesn't just sit on my shelf either.
To each their own, I am actually quite jelly of that Cheetahmen cart Yoshi.
