Haha. Those games are fantastic and totally my style when it comes to Zelda. Minish Cap and the rest just haven't been the same to me.

Thank you, but the Princess is in another castle... just kidding, haha! Bye Bye!
Hah. Been ages since I've ran through these two in full and it was a nostalgia blast. I said otherwise earlier when I was replaying SMW, "just makes me want to play SMB3, the superior game"... but I might agree with what Ziggy pointed out there. The SMB3 stages are probably half the length of any level in SMW. It was fun finding the secret exits and SMW does have a bit more content, minus the powerups. But it's got Yoshi!
I like the visuals and aesthetics of SMB3 a tad more, I just love that blocky style for Mario. But... I guess I may actually favor SMW a bit more overall now. I really do love some of the later worlds in SMB3 though, Sky Land, Pipe Land, etc, and some of the cool unique ideas like the Giant Land or whatever it was called. It was humorous how evil Dark Land looked and sounded haha. SMW was the same, it's kind of funny how lighter in tone Bowser is presented nowadays.
I guess if I had one issue going back to them after all this time, is that the bosses are mostly major pushovers. I guess this is where I'd give Yoshi's Island and New Super Mario Bros U the edge.
Otherwise I had like 50 lives stacked in both throughout most of the runs. But I was surprised and enjoyed how much I died actually, since I used to know these games so well. Though I'd also say, I don't feel quite as precise with the Wii U Pro controllers d-pad compared to the SNES controller. So... they weren't exactly tough, but not the complete cake walk I remembered them being.
Good times. Definitely in the mood for more platformers.

Re: Games Beaten 2014
You're not crazy. Super Mario Bros 3 is better than Super Mario World. It's science. Super Mario World was ambitious to the point of being overzealous. There's too many worlds, levels are too long, too much everything. It makes it hard to focus, makes progress through the game hard to quantify. And then, when you beat the game, did you really beat the game? Star Road might still await.
Super Mario Bros 3 is streamlined and I've never felt like I shortchanged myself come the title screen no matter which route I took to get to King Koopa.

But it was pretty fun, despite not particularly liking quite a few stages (I really don't like large insta-death pits), camera being dumb, and my bad platforming skills haha. It's not my favourite Mario (Super Mario World might be... haven't played in a while to be sure), but it's still pretty good.

Re: Games Beaten 2014
Hmm, well I think I enjoyed SMW a bit more this time around. I thought the difficulty curve was a bit more consistent as well. SMB3 had some tougher ones in the middle, but some stages later on were still really easy.Flake wrote:You're not crazy. Super Mario Bros 3 is better than Super Mario World. It's science. Definitely beat Star World and the special stages, so yeah. I actually hate what it does to the color scheme. I thought when you finish the special world, if you don't go into that last star warping you back to Yoshi's Island it won't change everything, but even after I backtracked to the other star back to Star World, yeah it was all changed. lol
The special stages are some of my favorites, wish the level design was a little crazier like that throughout the main game. It's really cool how the title screen is an actual level. That blew my mind the first time I got there as a kid. I think for years I always thought the second special stage was near impossible, took me forever to figure out where the extra balloon power ups were for some reason haha.

Escape Goat 2 was the first game I received from The Indie Box. And I'm glad I did. I'm willing to bet I would not have looked into this game on my own. But I adored it. I've played it on and off all month. I've convinced my wife to give it a shot. I've applauded my victories and swore incessantly at my inadequacies. It is a brilliant puzzle/platformer.

And as you can see, in the end I only unlocked about 50% of the levels!
This game is super replayable. Even if you're just going for 100%. Awesome stuff. Highly recommended to everyone on a retro gaming forum.

The Conduit for Wii is a mixed bag of a first person shooter. You've got great controls, an impressive graphics engine, and ferocious shootouts galore. However a lame B-movie plot, tedious game design, and inconsistent presentation mar the fun. Stuff like hidden key hunts, invisible enemies, invisible deadly mines, and endlessly spawning bad guys will test your patience too often. Yet at times The Conduit manages to invoke nostalgia for the original Half-Life, so it must be doing something right once in a while.

Metroid Prime- I am not a big Metroid guy, having only just played and beaten Super Metroid just last year. BUT, I will say that when the conversation becomes "What is the best Metroid game?" it usually is between Super Metroid and Prime. And having just completed both in about a year, I can honestly say that I think Metroid Prime is the best Metroid.
Within the first 20 minutes of gameplay I could tell this was going to be a great game. The immersion was great. I loved getting the weapon and suit upgrades. The story was more or less told through the Space logs you would find throughout the game. Boss fights were fun and a few were challenging (Flaahgra was the toughest, IMO). My only complaints were the platforming parts and all the back tracking. The back tracking is understandable though, as this IS a Metroid game and you WILL be backtracking a lot. As for the platforming sections, it just is harder to do when the game is a FPS. Sometimes the lock on system gave me fits, especially if I had to hold down the R button to aim up and then hit L to lock on. I have heard that the Prime Trilogy has better controls and that the Wii controls actually work better. All in all it was a great game and I really enjoyed it. Although it came close, I don't think it knocked off Vice City for my 2002 GOTY.

You should try the Wii version. The immersion in the GCN version was ruined by the controls for me. The Wii version is perfection.

No kidding. About once every 2 years I decide 'I'm going to play and enjoy Echoes'. I make it about two days and then give up. I've gone so far as to buy the guide in anticipation of the next time I try.Exhuminator wrote:Now try Echoes and wonder WTF happened.
