I know but I don't know why they even bothered putting one in if they weren't* going to put any effort into it.

Vanquish on the 360 and was left pretty disappointed. The last hour was complete and utter shit which made you question why they even bothered putting a story in at all

.
Basically the story is crap from the get go and in the last hour they shove the crap of all craps down your throat. There is no real conclusion war is still imminent, the conspiracy has achieved its desired outcome, the main bad guy is no where to be found, and your entire effort is pretty much made completely pointless by the last events which occur on the space station/weapon.
Basically they left the ending wide open for a sequel which unless some miracle occurs will never and should never happen. The universe and characters are so poorly written and developed that this game has reserved a space near the top of my worst game stories ever list.
In my experiences, Platinum Games are great games due to their gameplay, NOT their story (I think you mentioned you liked the gameplay).
Did you ever play Bayonetta?

Video games in general should never be played for story.

But why else would I want to play a Visual Novel?

Really? I mean, I totally agree that gameplay should be the #1 concern, most of the time. But there are cases when story is a HUGE factor in a game. Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy games, etc.

I think it comes down to genre. Some are more suited for storytelling than others.

I completely disagree, 100%.

Really I am more of a story guy but I do enjoy score based/arcade style games as well. I don't mind games that have a simple or loose story that is really just there to move things along, but what killed me in this game was the amount of BS they pulled

.
I mean they tried to have this dark mysterious conspiracy going in the back ground but they totally fudged it up. Plus the last hour felt like they gave up. It seemed as if chunks of the story were missing and there was no real conclusion to the main conflict.
Overall I would still give it a 6-7 out of 10 but it definately let me down with the cliff hanger endings.
On a final note.

Here is my list so far for games beaten this year. It is pretty small, since the majority were completed during the week breaks between semesters
I just finished two games, Legend of the Mystical Ninja for the SNES and Bucky O'Hare for the Arcade.
Legend of the Mystical Ninja - I loved the Nintendo 64 game and found it a shame that the U.S. has not been able to experience a fraction of the whacky games Konami has made in the franchise. I decided to visit the SNES game and try it out and loved every minute of it. I love the combat, the art style, the enemies and the dungeons. There are really cool unique features that the game has with their own versions of Breakout and Gradius built into the game, not to mention a slew of other fun mini-games. There were a lot of little touches the game had to make it different. You had rotating dungeons and a slew of unique boss battles that were both twisted, but fun to fight. It wasn't simply, dodge attack and beat the snot out of the boss. You had to think on your toes. I loved it.
Bucky O'Hare - I picked a random beat 'em up on MAME and happened to land on Bucky O'Hare. The game is a mixture of the traditional Beat 'em up mixed with a SHMUP. Attacks were all ranged and there was a nice mixture of the two differing genres. The game only took me $3.75 to beat and I found it to be pretty easy. I have to say though that the game is incredibly strange. Never really knowing anything about the universe, playing a strange mixture of Flash Gordon-esque sci-fi and anthropomorphic saturday morning cartoon show was a weird twist. It had full voices and was very enjoyable!

Holy crap! I didn't even know there was an arcade version of Bucky O Hare! Is it as crazy hard as the NES one is?
