That is bad, very bad they're raising the price on this. Could be they are lawyering up or they're just being crappy about it like a common ebay predatory reseller thug playing off of demand. Whatever the reason I really doubt their part costs have gone up.

I'm kind of sick of seeing the gpl criers fouling up R5 threads that cover the system/updates and usage. At least on this site it has its own thread and very popular too it seems.

Wow, for once it paid off to be an early adopter.

I don't do much IP work, but based on my limited understanding of the facts, I think that the software's original authors may be entitled to some sort of relief. That is, if Hyperkin violated their copyright, they could obtain an order preventing Hyperkin from selling any additional R5s. Likewise, they might be able to obtain some sort of damages based on the number of units sold, etc.

(They can probably forget claims based on a violation of the "license" agreement. In my experience, it is very difficult to enforce draconian software "license" agreements in a court of law. This is especially true where, as here, the software's authors gave the software away for free. "Copyleft" is also not a term recognized in the law.)

That said, it will be exceptionally difficult for the authors to prove money damages since they gave away the software for free. Likewise, determining whether Hyperkin violated the author's copyright in a court of law would likely be very, very expensive (i.e., $100,000.00+), and I doubt that the authors will be willing to spend the amounts necessary to obtain a court order prohibiting the sale of R5s. (This is especially true since the case is likely to be extremely complex, and Hyperkin can probably mount some sort of "fair use" defense even if the software's authors are able to prove that Hyperkin copied their code.) Finally, bringing a lawsuit related to the software would reveal a lot of facts about it; so, if the software's authors copied parts of it from another source (as some people have speculated), they could find themselves subject to litigation or without standing to enforce their alleged copyright.

Accordingly, I suspect that, while the software's authors can send "cease and desist" letters until they are blue in the face, they likely have a right with a remedy, and I very much doubt that they will bring a lawsuit.

This + This = these. I'm glad this thread hasn't gotten to the levels over on DP's thread lately. People actually *enjoy* the Retron 5? NAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know where all the problems are coming from, I haven't had any games not work (just a few not recognized but still playable), no slowdowns, no audio/video issues, no lag, none of that stuff purported to affect every game and every unit, supposedly. It was well worth the purchase, and the patience certainly paid off to get it at $99.

Agreed. This whole stolen code fiasco really sucks and all, but I'm still enjoying my unit. Even if they don't update it anymore, BETA 6 does everything I need it to do.

My only complaint so far is the finicky SFC slot.

To all the the people saying it's stupid to buy the Retron5 because it's just an emulation machine:
Please tell me how I can put together a decent emulation set-up that supports the original controllers, goes through HDMI and as an added bonus, uses the original cartridges so I can use my old saves. Oh, and it has to be $100 including shipping...

Nobody? I didn't think so.

Even at $140, this thing is excellent. It surpassed every expectation that I had.

The more I look at the bulky CRT next to me and the stack of consoles beside it, the more this thing becomes appealing.

I'm so close to buying a Retron 5 to use on my HDCRT, but the TV has DVI and RCA audio input. I use a HDMI to DVI adapter cable and the the RCA output jacks of my existing HDMI components such as the cable box and upscaling DVD player.

Has anyone tried the Retron 5 with an adapter to hookup RCA audio or is the Retron 5 strictly digital audio in the HDMI jack?
