Video Game "Look what I found"

Is switching out the circuit boards really a "thing" that some assholes like to amuse themselves with? I remember reading a story (maybe it was here) about someone buying a Phantasy Star cart that ended up being Monopoly.

Again...here is my tale of the crulest circuit board replacement ever perpetrated by man...

Here is my tale of woe...

My wife and I went to Asheville, North Carolina this weekend, and while she was at the Grove Park Inn Arts & Crafts Conference, I went hunting for games. I ended up with a ton of games and I stayed well within my budget. Overall, it was great weekend...with one exception.

On the way back to Charlotte, I stopped at a flea market. It was later in the day Sunday, and people were starting to close up. There was, however, a video game dealer that was still open. I looked around for a bit, and noticed a bin of items behind the counter. I ask to look through the bin, and the owner agrees - stating that he has not had time to look up and price the items in it. After sorting through some common Genesis games I find...Ninja Gaiden Trilogy.

Camonflauging it with copies of Crytalis (NES) and Mad Max (NES) and mixing it in with the other things I wanted, I offer him $40. We settle on $43, and I quickly exit - very happy with my find. (My $43 purchased El Viento (Genesis CIB); Tekken (PS1 longbox CIB); Ren & Stimpy Buckaroo$ (NES loose); Crystalis (NES loose); Mad Max (NES loose); and Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (SNES loose).)

When I get home, I throw Ninja Gaiden Trilogy in my SNES to test it out, and...BattleClash loads up.

Someone apparently switched the board in the cartridge for BattleClash. Who does that? Why? WHY!!!!!!??????

This was something jerks did back in the day. Listen up: Jerko receives a really crappy NES cart for birthday from clueless grandma. Said Jerk rents a really good game from the local video store, and swaps the innards.

Had an interesting trip to Goodwill today...found a bunch of psone games and actually found some goodies. All 2.99:

Valkyrie Profile (this dropped in value...I remember it being over $100 at one point)
Armored Core Master of Arena (thought this was worth more)

and then came the sealed psx games (I was unsure on value but bought almost all of them because they were sealed...and also cause I havnt seen sealed psone games since like 2003.

Motocross Mania 2 (I figured for $3 why not)

...I think I did very well for 3 bucks a pop! Definitely happy!

The last game for the system was FIFA Football 2005 released in October 2004, and the last PSone units were sold on Christmas 2004 for a total of 102 million units shipped.

went to a flea market on Saturday, and while the obivous rare/valuable games were marked up at Amazon prices , the guy did manage to let the more obsure ones slip past him
for example.
a CIB copy of the night trap for the Sega cd, I got for $15

I also picked up some NES games although I feel like I paid a bit much for them, I'm still happy to be able to add them to the collection.

Maybe...but this place reeked...REEKED...of smoke; so, rescuing/fumugating those games was - to a certain extent - an act of good will. If only I could have saved more of them!!!

The whole cart board swapping thing was a huge problem for rental places back in the day. I'm pretty sure that alone was the main reason Nintendo started using those security screws in NES carts.

Lots of former rental carts I've seen actually have security strips along the side of the cart so you couldn't tamper with it.
