There's a handful of White and Black spells post-Level 5 he can learn before the class change, but a bunch of good ones are locked out. Plus he can't learn any Level 8 spell. The trade off between him and a Black Mage seems to be way better physical offense, defense, HP, and of course the ability to learn White spells too. I did my research before starting, so I don't really regret the choice. Just kinda makes Black Magic offense a little harder is all.

EDIT:

Fire Crystal restored, and Airship acquired! Those ice caverns are kinda tough to navigate, but dropping the Levistone into the desert and watching that awesome flying machine rise up was so worth it. Can't wait to crisscross the world in style.

I played through Final Fantasy many times when I was young. I tried many combinations. I remember doing four red mages. Although, my favourite setup was fighter, red, black, white.

Haven't people solo'd the game with a white mage? That nuts.

^Yeah, that seems ridiculously hard. "The best offense is no offense, and a weak defense."

Final Fantasy II

Just finished the cave where you deposit the dragon's egg.

Used the swap trick to level up my party. It's tedious, but I have some beefed up characters now.

Fighter, Thief, White Mage, Black Mage is my suggested team for someone doing their first and likely only play-through. It allows you to use almost every weapon and armor you will find. Although, due to programming error in the NES version, the thief is essentially just a weaker fighter. The PSone version fixes this and makes the thief very strong.

^ I think that's the default party in most versions of the game. It is for Origins and Dawn of Souls at least.
