It seems that the master system era was the period where sega had their interns draw the artwork

This is a good showcase of the worst Master system covers.

My personal favorites are the Hitler Saluting Robot, The SegaCard covers (just the laziest thing I have ever seen), and Alex Kidd which is just a big WTF.

Seriously, I remember being puzzled at the choice of box art for SMS titles. They didn't make sense as a kid, they don't make any more sense now.

Here's what I was stoked to find this weekend:
K-Mart
Dreamcast Collection Xbox 360 - 14.99
Yakuza 4 PS3 - 14.99 $3.75

I know I overpaid for Dreamcast collection, but why on earth is Yakuza 4 only $4.00? In the end I paid $20 for two great games brand new!

R-Type, Ys: The Vanished Omens, Phantasy Star, and a couple of other random RPGs whose names I can't recall are the only SMS games with "good" artwork.

I wonder how badly that artwork hurt the company. Imagine shopping for a game in the early 90s and seeing Ninja Gaiden (NES) and The Ninja (SMS) side by side. Which one would you buy?

Clearly Ninja Gaiden. But that's not fair. Ninja Gaiden (NES) should really be compared to Ninja Gaiden (MS), which is considerably better:

Look up Pro Wrestling

My best guess is that someone used some very bad clipart of a wrestler holding an opponent in a head lock. Along the way someone else, who didn't know english or what the title meant or what the game was, must have thought it was supposed to be a decapitated head - because that's what video games are? and edited it.

That's my best guess as to how that happened, which if it were true might be the most thought anyone ever put into a Master System game cover.

I think the SMS Ninja Gaiden is PAL only unfortunately... I would love to play it.
