We're now two years into the PS4 and XB1's life and surely either have got to be the worst first two years of any mainstream console's.
I agree and echo what others have said. I own quite a lot of PS4 games, but very few really interest me that much.
Compared to the first two years of either the PS1, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube and possibly even the original XBox, this generation has been weak in my opinion.

Re: The PS4 thread
I peg this mainly on the death of mid-tier games and publishers. In 2003, we had AAA games like Unreal Tournament, Splinter Cell, Zelda, Call of Duty, and Madden, along with smaller stuff like Freedom Fighters, Red Faction 2, and Rayman 3. Nowdays everything's either on Mountain Dew bottles, or it's some pixel-art idie game that will be featured in a Humble Bundle 6 months later. Nothing in between, barely.Reprise wrote:We're now two years into the PS4 and XB1's life and surely either have got to be the worst first two years of any mainstream console's.

I guess gaming got too expensive to continue on the old model once the hardware got super advanced.

That and most publishers seem to have taken "quantity over quality" to far too...I'd love to see a return to having more of the types of games that I seem to recall coming out between the 90's and heck even the early days of the DS...

You know the PS4 has disc versions of Wasteland 2, Rayman Legends, Nobunaga's Ambition, and so on (like some Gamerforlife mentioned) too right? (and being fair, XB1 has a few of them too, like Rayman/Wasteland/Divinity).BoringSupreez wrote: I peg this mainly on the death of mid-tier games and publishers. IMO, it's what Chronozilla mentioned above. A PS4 or XB1 are both great consoles if they are someone's primary or only device. If you immediately cut out anything on PC, or otherwise not exclusive, then sure, the selection seems a lot more sparse.
If you don't already have it for last-gen or something, the console version of Diablo III is outstanding for up to four players. Think Gauntlet Legends, albeit with a lot more stopping to equip new stuff.alienjesus wrote:Are there any good PS4 games with local co-op play?

It's only been two years? Huh.Reprise wrote:We're now two years into the PS4 and XB1's life and surely either have got to be the worst first two years of any mainstream console's.
To be honest, I'm a little surprised people are disliking the current gen so much. In my opinion I'd say PS4 has had a much better start than PS3 did. PS3 didn't have anything that really interested me for the first two or three years. PS4 already has Bloodborne at the very least, a good handful of other quality games, and a bunch on the horizon which look great.
Also I do have to wonder how many people are expecting too much of consoles which have been out for only two years. Though I admit it feels like they've been out longer. Either way, Isn't it standard practice for consoles to come out and not have much (if anything) to choose from for the first couple years?

Re: The PS4 thread
The Dreamcast had a better library at launch than the PS4 and Xbox One have right now. Hell, the Dreamcast lived for about two years and it was hit after hit.
As for the PS3, there was Valkyria Chronicles which has held up the best in terms of early releases. Demon's Souls was just barely outside the two year window. Aside from that, Uncharted 1, Ratchet & Clank Future, Resistance, and Folklore were good for their time, though they don't hold up nearly as well.
Meanwhile, if you look at the PS2, within the first two years of that you had Jak & Daxter, GTA3, Ico, THPS3, MGS2, Gran Turismo 3, Devil May Cry, SSX, Virtua Fighter 4, Final Fantasy X, Klonoa 2, DOA2 Hardcore, Silent Hill 2, can I stop here? Can I please stop here? I think you get the point.

Disclaimer: I started writing this post before the7k posted.
A quick jaunt through this century of games (Dreamcast withstanding), here's a smattering of titles from each home platform released during the first two years. As the generations go on, the titles become far less cherry picked. Everything here was exclusive the year it launched.
GEN6GEN7GEN8
Something else to keep in mind, on this two year post launch scale, the average number of exclusives per system is in the 60+ range (Even Wii U! Which people railed for not having exclusives for the last three years) ... until you get to PS4 and XB1. Even counting digital titles, they don't break 30 exclusive titles by the two year mark (PS4 is 29, XB1 is 26).
People always complain about it, but traditionally, no, (lifetime) exclusive games of significant note are coming out within the first two years. That happened even last generation and this generation with Wii U.MrEco wrote:It's only been two years? Re: The PS4 thread
Dreamcast and PS2 games also took a smaller team, less time and less budget to make. And as has been noted many a time, most people consider the early PS3 library weak.the7k wrote:The Dreamcast had a better library at launch than the PS4 and Xbox One have right now. The PS2 was also a more sure-fire investment to develop for. The PS1 had dominated the previous generation. Making PS2 games was an obvious decision. Last gen was probably the closest video game generation since the SNES and Mega Drive era. There was no obvious choice of which company to develop for, particularly between Sony and Microsoft. So you develop for both, which takes even more time and money and even bigger teams. And you also develop for PC. And then there are no exclusives for the consoles worth noting, and everyone percieves the libraries as weak.
I can understand people being disappointed with the current gen libraries although I think there are plenty of good games out there. I just think we're note seeing a lot of diversity right now and we probably won't until (unless?) the cost of developing for the system goes down to make it worth putting out the less mainstream genres on it.
There's still a bunch of games being made for PS3. It's cheaper to develop for, and the larger audience means niche games have more customers to sell to.
Re: The PS4 thread
Yes! I bought the Dreamcast soon after launch and that console just spoiled me rotten! Soul Calibur, Virtua Tennis, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue, Metropolis Street Racer, Jet Set Radio, Marvel vs. Capcom, Power Stone, Resident Evil Code Veronica. BTW, I'm not really hating on the PS4 and I get the analytical reasons people using to explain changes in gaming. I'm just stating how I feel. I've just yet to really pick up a game on the PS4 that I think is genuinely amazing and really stands out to me. That's just how I feel, although I respect that lots of people might feel Bloodborne or some other games fit that category.
