Re: Shmup of the Month Club (Month off for STGT12)
Sorry if it has been mentioned, but is foxhound "NoMoreHeroes" on shmups? If so, hot damn, congrats on that V-V score!

yeah well, Week 1 was mine. Week 2 yours. So it's still anyone's game. Hey what's this I hear about Salamander 2 giving you a tough time on MAME? Wasn't it just last week that

I installed the newest version of regular old MAME with a very basic frontend last summer on my cab and haven't run into issues with anything I've tried to play in STGT or anything else for the past year or so. It handles whatever I throw at it, unless MAME itself tells me the ROM doesn't have full support.

This is a case of MAME itself saying there are problems with the game and that it doesn't yet have full support.

right. MAME can totally be a headache compared to just popping a game into a console and knowing it will run the way it's supposed to. I totally agree with you, guy.

I prefer MAME because of quick fast resets, the button I probably hit more than "bomb".

Yes, the Fox has proven to be a dedicated shmuppist? shmupper? shmuppee? Well, whatever the vernacular, glad he's on our team...

Gotta love F3F3F3F3 (reset on MAME)
I too am humbled. I never once considered myself pro-level on shmups but it looks like I ranked slightly better this week on V-5 than on Strikers 99. It's nice to see the dynamic scoreboard. I play a lot of other games throughout the week too, sometimes it'd be nice to have that level of dedication but I still collect and play all sorts of games.
This week though, it's Konami, and its hori/vert, and it's not Axelay.

Re: Shmup of the Month Club (Month off for STGT12)
so damn, Salamander 2 is hard!
EDIT: After a night of playing, I can make it to stage 3 consistently, and can make it through stage 1 taking no damage. At first I was worried because it felt really tough, but it's the kind of game where I feel myself continually making progress which is always a reassuring feeling. Keeps you motivated to keep playing.

I've always been good at Salamander 2.

Damn, this game is hard.
Well, at least to score in. I'm missing something?
I only have one day - put in a little over an hour...
I don't recall the bosses in this game being tough...at all. Truly just need to get at them a couple times and memorize patterns. Boss 2 just hang off to the side and let your options do the work. Boss 3 just keep real close to it and circle around it, again, very closely, again, letting your options do the work. Boss 4, same as boss 3, find the safe spot to avoid the "arm release", then just tuck into one of the 4 safe spots, circle around very closely (so when he speeds up, you can keep up, closeness is a must) and then SHOOT THE CORE! Stage 5...I don't recall, but I remember it being easier than 3 and 4 even...
Also, be sure to use your options to clear out the hairy areas, particularly on stages 3 and 5 iirc.
So far only been to stage 4 tonight and a little over 200K. I fear I won't have time to master the mid-boss bonuses, so my score is going to hurt our team - sorry.. Back at it...

Re: Shmup of the Month Club (Month off for STGT12)
I find the bosses (first two) much easier than the levels that precede them. I don't think I've gotten the hang of using my options well though.
I've hit 113k so far.
