Shit like this is why I don't post on this thread as often as I should, being a metal-head. If it's not some hardcore Black or Death metal band, you guys just rip on it.

Why do you guys have to be elitst a-holes about metal all the time?

Personally, I think bands that burn churches and murder each aren't worth my attention, but I don't go ripping on you guys for enjoying the scum of the earth.

Not liking what you do =/= elitism

Not everyone is religious and gets super upset about hearing a church was burned down. That's not to say it's excusable by any means, but for someone like me that does not care about such things, it just seems like random arson. To me "scum of the earth" is something that describes like a child rapist or something, not some whacko that torched a few buildings.

Stop being such a Christian elitist.

And the original motivation behind the church arson was resisting "Christian imperialism" (forcing natives to either denounce their religion or be tortured&killed), which to my knowledge has been deemed a bad thing a long time ago (Christian crusades that is). Maybe it would've been more acceptable when the subjugation was happening and not 8-10 centuries after, but hey, it's the thought that counts right?

Most of us here are just shootin' the shit, don't take anything too seriously. I don't care if someone likes Deftones, I'm just amused to see stuff like that mentioned here when we already have a "normal music" thread.

No one here is a death or black metal "elitist". I only listen to the most popular of popular death metal, as well as mostly well-known black metal too, including plenty of "indie/hipster" black metal that plenty of hardcore fans would scoff at.

As for the murdering and church burning shit - some of us find second-wave black metal interesting from an artistic, musical, and historical standpoint. No one is supporting the actions of those people.

The notion that you can't enjoy any piece of art, whether it's music, cinema, book or a game because the person who made is other wise or in some ways a bad person is idiotic. As long as the work itself has nothing to do with the action nor glorifies it, it's irrelevant what kind of person is behind the work. I guess I can't enjoy The Naked Gun movies anymore because OJ Simpson was charged for murder

The person who made it really doesn't matter in my opinion, but the art itself.

If you listen to NSBM and say you just like the rythm, or throw down on some misogynistic grindcore, I am going to be much less lenient in thinking that you don't identify with the ideas presented in the music- with the (majority) of gore and satan lyrics not applying seeing as they are tongue in cheek.

It's hard to truly separate the artists from the art. And sometimes the art itself is repulsive (misogynistic death metal and grind, for instance).

But you can enjoy music while simultaneously acknowledging problematic elements that are contained therein.

In the case of something like NSBM, I can admit that specific bands are "good" musically while recognizing that their ideology and lyrics are abhorrent. That said, I would never buy a NSBM album as I don't want my money going to organizations like The Pagan Front, which is pretty explicitly neo-fascist.

I'm not even that much of a religious person, but I still think church burners are scum. I actually would equate them with child rapists. Churches are important parts of a community and of people's lives. And the fact that I'm not super religious doesn't mean that I can't respect the sacredness and significance of a church to others.

I won't listen to anything by any band that is involved in that, no matter how good their music

There are things I can overlook. I think scientology is crazy, but I didn't stop watching Tom Cruise after he became a part of that because he was in awesome stuff like Ghost Protocol and Tropic Thunder and is a good actor

But burning churches and murder? That's a bridge too far for me. You can't separate the art and the artist for some things in my opinion

It's more than just "not agreeing with what you like". Some of you guys start trashing bands that people bring up. If someone brings up a band you don't like, you don't have to start pointing out why they suck, laugh at them, or talk about how it's not as brutal as this or that. Just don't talk about the band if you don't like them instead of trying to make someone feel like a jack-ass for bringing up Deftones or Motley Crue.

I mean, it's not like metal doesn't get a bad enough rep from ignorant non-metal people as it is. No reason to add to that.
