I don't think article is saying that. It is saying people aren't settling for secure jobs or careers, but they have too lofty expectations and all want to be stars, which is unrealistic. Then, not living up to these expectations generates unhappiness. It is also many not realizing that it took awhile for our parents/grandparents careers to really blossom. We are a culture of instant gratification nowadays, and I am as guilty of it as the next person.AppleQueso wrote:Every time I read an article like this, I can't help but hear "Poor economy? Bah, none of these are real issues, the real problem is that there's something wrong with this generation."Jmustang1968 wrote:Kind of reminded me of this: http://www.waitbutwhy.com/2013/09/why-g ... happy.html
I found it to be a pretty good read.

While I didn't read the article most of them like it have a good point. I constantly hear "X isn't a career", which is usually all arrogance and decades ago it would of been considered fine respectable work.
Sure retail is a shitty job when you're at the bottom of the barrel but if you really like the company and you like what you do there isn't any reason why being manger, then district manager, then regional manager etc etc and so forth can't be a career goal.
Some people out there really do want to run their own Pizza Hut and working in one under someone is not a bad way to start and in fact is probably the best way. We shouldn't look down on those people because it isn't a 9 to 5 office career or some dream of a major figure income/stardom.

It really depends on the family you grew up with. If you grew up with well educated white-collar folk then being a district manager isn't seen as a respected career. On the other hand if you were born into a blue-collar family then it wouldn't be perceived as a bad choice. I remember when I was in elementary school I wanted to be a real estate agent for a sort period and when I mentioned it to my parents I got one of these.KDub wrote:While I didn't read the article most of them like it have a good point. Now is it a bad career? Not at all. Nor was it arrogance, just the desire for me to have a better life then them.

You probably got that because you were in elementary school thinking about being a real estate agent. Can't say many kids choose that job path when most of them don't even think of jobs.oxymoron wrote: I remember when I was in elementary school I wanted to be a real estate agent for a sort period and when I mentioned it to my parents I got one of these.

Ticked: The goddamn Fenrir refuses to bail, after the Mjollnir took 10 reloads to bail. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to have rewards tied to a random occurrence that doesn't get weighed in the player's favor needs to be shot.

I guess. I still don't think they'd be too pleased if I was aspiring to be a real estate agent even at this age.KDub wrote:You probably got that because you were in elementary school thinking about being a real estate agent.
