If you install priiloader and have a NAND backup the wii is brick proof (unless you do something really dumb like overwriting boot2 and deleting your NAND backup).

It took me 10 minutes to softmod my wii with backups and unsigned wads (wiiware and vc) working. Dead easy.

One more question, pertaining to compatible PS2 systems, Free MCBoot works will all PS2s except 9000 slims, correct? Do ALL 9000 slims have internal power supplies vs. the external power supply of the 7000? I'm asking because I'll likely be buying a slim from eBay in the coming weeks and I need something so I can verify the model without asking the seller to look at the SCPH number (as you all know, sellers tend to be completely retarded when it comes to this stuff, no matter how simple reading a sticker is).

Slims are just too much easier to work with as far as the laser is concerned. I know I could do the HDD method too, but with a Free MCBoot card and a binder of discs, it would be easier to go to a friend's house with it.

edit: is there a Free MCBoot related utility that would let me install saves onto the memory card from GameFaqs, etc.? One thing I would really like is to be able to download saves for games like Gran Turismo that are a huge PITA to unlock 100%.

Also, checking again, Swap Magic is going to cost more like $30 to my door, so that $3 shipping is looking more and more attractive. I'm bidding on a PS2 slim bundle with a memory card right now. If I win, I'll clear it and send it your way.

Most slims are compatible except for:

I have 5000 & 7000 series so I'm not sure but I think you're right according to this article:

You just use uLaunch to transfer saves from memory card to USB thumb drive and back.
I can't comment on using a game save from gamefaq.

nicccce, that way I can back up my old saves from games I don't play often and have just a dedicated Free MCBoot card. OK, I'm totally diggin this, as soon as I get a spare card in (gonna wait till I get a slim just in case it comes with one), I'll let you know and send you a card when I get a spare.

Using Gamesaves in nearly any format is pretty easy using PS2 Save Builder and uLaunchELF. I keep this link bookmarked for instructions:

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.

Not sure if this is the right thread or not...

I have a PS2 slim (SCPH-70011).

I have a PS2 memory card.

Am I right in thinking that the card can be "programmed" in such a way as to allow for a softmod of the console? I know it has to be done by someone with a already modded console...

Anyway, is there someone who would be willing to do whatever is needed to the memory card to allow me to play backups/imports, movie files from USB, etc.? I would of course pay shipping both ways.

Yes, your PS2 can do the exploit. Only SCPH-9000x model with BIOS 2.30 and newer have the exploit disabled. You can send your card to me or you can try to do the install yourself if you have a suitable method (see http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/index.php under the installation tab). I've done cards for about 8-9 racket members thus far. Send me a PM if you're interested.

Cool. Nice to know you don't need someone else's modded console - I'll take a look at the guide and let you know if I have problems!

UPDATE: I had a copy of Agent Under Fire on hand, so got it working using that method. Already tried playing avi files off of a memory stick and worked like charm :D.

So here's another question - how is emulation on the PS2? How easy is it to play Japanese or PAL imports? Any recommended places to get homebrew or other useful files?
