Too bad the game's not all that great apparently.

It can't escape being compared to Unreal Tournament, and it doesn't play as smooth as Unreal. But, you know, Unreal is that rare type of shooter that you can devote years to. Nexuiz does, however, have some fancy shiny architecture and a cool dubstep soundtrack, so if you're looking to play that kind of game in a shinier, techier atmosphere, it's fun for a few rounds.

Hey JT, how was Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood? I enjoyed the original a good bit but felt it could have been expanded upon considerably. The thought of a Wild West game done like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or the Elder Scrolls games gets me excited.

The following shots are from Fallout 3. Bethesda really did a great job with creating a ruined America that is just a desolate husk of its former glory, now filled with bandits, raiders, and desperate people trying to survive.

Here are a few shots from SkyDrift. I just picked this up today since it is only $5 for the daily deal. I recommend it. It's fast paced and fun. It's basically like Mario Kart with airplanes.

I have a love/hate relationship with Fallout 3 graphics. On one hand, the overall ideas are good and the wasteland feeling is there but I think it suffers from poor textures, specially on buildings (See JT's 5th picture) and everything sticks weirdly out of the ground. It seems kind of washed out with a filter and while it's nowhere as noticiable as those films that slap on a grey filter to make everything "dark" (See: Latest Harry Potter movies), I can't help but be reminded of it.

I feel similarly about Fallout 3. Everything is brown and ugly, which is kind of the point. There's no life left in a post-nuclear wasteland and so it shouldn't be lush and green. But it feels so monochromatic, even with things where there should be color, that it can just feel boring overall. And, yeah, there are weird inconsistencies in the textures. Like in the old woman above, the wrinkles in her face are well defined, but the wrinkles in her clothing are blurry.

Overall though, I appreciate the art direction for Fallout 3 because I love the juxtaposition of the hopefullness and optimism of '50s-era propoganda, artwork, and architecture combined with the desolation and barbarism of the current apocalyptic reality.

These are from Ys: The Oath in Felghana. This game is infuriatingly difficult and grind heavy, but has superbly satisfying play control that makes it all worthwhile.
