After this, I'm going to buy the Wii version of Sakura Wars, even though I know it's inferior, content-wise.

What the hell are you talking about? Boycotting companies means they either improve or lose business to better competitors. Supporting a company just because you feel you have to is completely moronic, same goes to the fanboys who are led blindly, not being able to make decisions for themselves and just buy whatever is 'cool'. That's the problem with brands, if people weren't fucking idiots and didn't buy based on brands instead of reviews/objective comparisons then the quality of hardware would be much higher.

By supporting these companies blindly you show that they can get away with lacklustre customer support and shoddy hardware.

You don't have to support companies. They either improve or you take your money elsewhere to another company who earned it.

Few companies in this generation of consoles has had anything noteworthy as far as customer support goes. Microsoft pissed off a lot of people by bricking their systems after the game pirating incident. Nintendo hasn't really had anything good coming out on the Wii for a while now, which tends to piss a lot of people off. And Sony with removing OtherOS. Personally, I think it's a lot like you said Niode. It is a chain reaction, but as far as the trend seems to be moving, it's not just one company that's pulling this off. It seems to be that one company does it, so the other companies leans in that direction as well. Unless you boycott all current gen consoles, I really don't think it's going to do any good.. unless, of course, you don't mind retro-gaming for the rest of your days. :)

Even with the bad economy, electronics including gaming continue to prosper. Everyone has to have the latest toy, no matter how high the credit card interest. Sony knows that and took easy, lazy way out to combat piracy. It would not have been a great effort to patch instead of removing a major feature.

No one could foresee features such as other OS capability being removed from purchased fats, just no longer supported or available as in the case of the newer slim.

Look at Toyota with recent quality control brake and throttle issues. Too long riding high, they dropped their guard with cheap parts. Real irony is that no Toyota recalled in Japan due to whatever laws prevented cheap parts in the Japan models. Sales dropped, Toyota scrambling now, I bet right now quality control is very high to regain their cliental.

Sony and for that matter, Microsoft RLOD will only get the message when the sales drop. No worries, there will always be a market for a game console, just the most reliable one if another competitor steps back in the 3 ring monopoly circus.

Regarding Microsoft banning consoles (they were banned, not bricked, they would still work but just not on xbox live, it was possible to 'fix' them so that they would work again but flashing a certain component on the motherboard) the people that were banned were banned due to having modified consoles used specifically for cheating/piracy. That's a justifiable reason. Nintendo's Wii being chock-full of crap-ware isn't really Nintendo's fault, it's just that these games are dirt cheap to produce and these companies exploit the uninitiated Wii users who will buy it blindly. Just look at all the crap games on the NES, the NES brought gaming to a new generation of uninitiated gamers and exploited them for all it's worth, It's one of the most well known and well loved systems for it's gems.

The removal of OtherOS harms legitimate consumers. I can see Microsoft's justification of banning the users of modified consoles on xbox live, it was a very heavy handed way of dealing with it but, aside from a few people who got caught in the crossfire (whether or not they actually were innocent is a different matter) it didn't harm legitimate consumers. The people who modified their consoles knew that they were likely to get banned, just like the people who modded their original xboxs were banned from Xbox Live. They knew perfectly well that's what they were getting into.

Since piracy isn't rife on the PS3 (I've heard people being able to swap discs with and play pirate games, but it requires substantial modification to the PS3, including have the entire thing in bits to do it) casual piracy (IE the kind seen on the PSP, or the original PS1) is non-existent. So removal of OtherOS does nothing but harm legitimate users. I think I would have been less pissed off if they had waited until there was substantial proof of piracy on the system and THEN shutting the barn door on them. Now they've just forced legitimate consumers to stick to 3.15 firmware, since there is ABSOLUTELY no point in upgrading. The 3.21 update does nothing. Absolutely nothing, apart from removal of the 'Install OtherOS' and 'Default System' options from the System Settings menu. They couldn't even be bothered to implement a non-destructive re-partition (like what BootCamp does on OS X when you no longer want your Windows partition on your mac) for users of the OtherOS option who do decide to 'upgrade' (read: downgrade) their firmware. We went months between 3.15 and 3.21 and all they do is edit an xml file? What a fucking joke.

Sneaky edit out of PSN if you don't downgrade. The blind "gotta PSN", "gotta buy" masses follow, watch tomorrow's iPad sales.

The thing is, that's not even part of the firmware. The PS3 always checks xx01.ps3.update.playstation.net for the PS3-updatelist.txt file, then checks it's own version against the 'latest' version of that file. If it returns lower then it stops you from connecting to PSN. There's no checks (As far as I know) on PSN that checks the version of your firmware and then disallows access, the check is purely local. Hence why you can DNS redirect and spoof the file it's expecting with a version that states the latest version of PS3 firmware is ver. 0.0000

Give me a break.

Sakura Wars is amazing on the PS2 and was originally designed and coded for the PS2.

You people are all getting too hot blooded over it by now. Yes I was pissed at first, just look at my previous posts in this very thread. But, the sad fact under all of this fury you guys are having is that the PS3 sucked for linux. It had no GPU or internet support, was capped at only 65% of possible computing power for the cell and was mostly worthless.

Was it a pretty shitty move for Sony to do it? Yes. Is it really going to matter to anyone after about a week or two from now? No. Just move on and give it a rest. I'll really start raising a shitstorm when the remove my ability to play games, stream media, or go online.

What you've really got to be asking yourselves is how pissed the militay's got to be after just purchasing 18,000 60Gigs for computing clouds only to have their ability to do so wiped.

They weren't going to use them for gaming anyway, so they simply won't update them.
