Who's excited for Metal Gear zombies?

"Plot: Following the evacuation of Big Boss and Kazuhira Miller from the besieged Mother Base, a wormhole opens in the sky and absorbs the offshore plant as well the remaining MSF soldiers. The soldiers are transported to an alternate reality along with the remains of Mother Base, to find the world full of hostile, crystalline zombie-like entities."

Thank fuckleberries Kojima finally got his forward thinking ass out of Konami, so we can have Yet Another Zombie Game™ that is totally not a rip off of Left 4 Dead.

Ok so someone needs to take my retro gaming man card as for years - decades - had this false idea that the Fantasy Zone series was, essentially Faceball 2000 meets Space Harrier. Pseudo first person angle shooting with smiley faces. Had no interest in it.

Today I flip on Fantasy Zone II (arcade vers) on the Sega 3D Classics set and am blown away that this series is right in my wheelhouse and something I've completely overlooked.

And this collection has both Master System games as extras - the original being "unlockable" but using the touch screen on an enemy in the 8-bit menu screen.

I love the Fantasy Zone games I've played thus far. I have the original Fantasy Zone on XBox 360 (Arcade emulation), 3DS (3D Fantasy Zone), Turbografx and Master System. Unlike most people who prefer arcade perfection, the SMS is definitely my favourite - it feels fluid, has better screen scrolling and a fairer difficulty than the Arcade game.

I've only played the 3D Classics version of Fantasy Zone II which is actually a completely different game to the original version. The original was developed for Master System before being ported to arcades. M2 then developed a special version of the game for the PS2 Sega Ages compilation of Fantasy Zone which rebuilt the entire game using 80s style Arcade graphics like the original Fantasy Zone, as well as adding loads of new mechanics and levels and stuff. That's the version they used for 3D Fantasy Zone 2 on 3DS.

I need to pick up Super Fantasy Zone on Mega Drive and the original version of Fantasy Zone 2 on SMS sometime to finish the set. I can live without Fantasy Zone: The Maze though

EDIT: Also, maybe this is why you thought the series was like Space Harrier - there's a cancelled game that was in development once upon a time called Space Fantasy Zone, which is literally cutesy Space Harrier with Opa-Opa.

^ Man that could be it. Especially with the naming like that "Space" - totally threw me off.

Looks like 3D Fantasy Zone: Opa Opa Bros is actually one version of the game I'm missing. The collection has II and the SMS version of the first, not the remaster noted here. I need to pick that up.

there's also the fact that Space Harrier begins by welcoming you to the... Fantasy Zone.

Fantasy Zone is great. I proudly own a little gashapon figure of Opa-Opa.

I only own the original Fantasy Zone (both arcade version via Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection and the SMS version) but the one I'd like to get next is the Game Gear version. It's a pretty different game and playing a cousin's copy was my first encounter with the series. But I so rarely play my Game Gear I don't know if I'd really like sitting down and playing it.

Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa on the Master System is one of the greatest shmups of all time. I adore it. It seems so cute, but this game will kick your ass. No wonder Opa-Opa be cryin'.

There was a first person-ish Fantasy Zone too:

You can read about it, and other nice games in the franchise, here:

So I was perusing through the "console colors" site and I couldn't believe how many different types of handheld color variations Nintendo pumped out during the DS era! Granted we had four hardware iterations but still! Most I have never seen or heard of till now.
