That MSX game is pretty rare, sadly.

And the C64 and Amiga are crippled by the fact that they use Atari-style one-button joysticks yet both feature libraries of games that essentially require more complex control schemes.

at least Amiga eventually made a 2-button and some games offer that option. Bonk's Adventure is one for instance.

Here's a question: Where does the whole "Mother brain" thing come from? I doubt it started with Metroid

I wonder if it's in Roadside Picnic? Since it's kind of in Stalker...

Definitely curious myself.

I have to imagine the "mother brain" concept reaches back pretty far into sci-fi fiction. I assume it's derived from the concept of insect mounds that have a queen as their central source of control (like ants, termites, bees, etc.).

I don't know when it started, but hey even Phantasy Star II uses the concept:

Well, it's not quite gaming related, but I just gave in and ordered a new TV for the geek armory. It's a 50" Samsung 4K TV, JU6500-series. Pretty good lag (26.5ms), good scaling, and it's huge compared to my 32" 720p Bravia. Should be fun times when it gets in!

I would normally do without, but I had $300 of Best Buy gift certificates burning a hole in my wallet from credit card rewards, and I'm also going to try to put together a big gaming night in the near future, and this will facilitate that. :)

Time to replay everything? Even going from a 32 to a 40 was insane to me. Got a 50 myself this year... held off on the 4k though, hopefully I don't regret it. They're all three Samsung too, have had good experiences with them.

I'm pretty set on getting a 70 inch next someday when I have my own place and living room haha.

26 ms is good lag? I thought for most kinds of gaming, even newer systems built to deal with lag, you wanted to shoot for sub-10 ms.

You're not going to find that in many HDTVs. The best you can hope for that I saw was 13.5ms, on a Vizio set. And that required using Game Mode on HDMI5.

I get virtually no lag on my current Bravia, but that's also a much older set.

Maybe we're talking about something different, though? Input lag is 27ms, as opposed to the response time of the LCD, which is usually sub-10ms. I've been staring at the display lag database for a while now, and the lowest I can see there for HDTVs is 17ms on the sets rated. To get any faster input lag response time, you have to go with smaller computer monitors instead, which are usually around 9-10ms of input lag time.

As for the 4K, I did it mainly because it's a clean multiple of 480p, 720p, and 1080p. So the scaling for that content should look really good. And the Samsungs supposedly have good upscaling engines.

Yeah, you're right. I was thinking of LCD response time, not input lag. My mistake. I looked up my TV downstairs and it clocks in at 40ms in game mode. But I don't play any games on it, so I guess it doesn't matter a bit : )
