I was talking to another MSX lover the other day, and he told me about a hidden gem called "Caos Begins". It was an entry in the MSXdev'07 contest. It's a very high quality exploratory platformer with excellent music, and FREE. You can download it here:
I was thinking about getting a C64 for a while (I never ended up getting one though) and the one thing I was concerned about was if it had proper S-Video output or not, as I never planned to also get a real C64 monitor.
AFAIK, the earliest C64 had a 5-pin AV output. Later bread box models change this to an 8-pin AV output, which has proper S-Video. All the ones I looked at on eBay, I would look for a picture of the back and count the AV pins. If it was 5-pin then I passed.
It's been a while so I'm not sure if this is correct, but... A bread box with black keys can have either a 5 or 8-pin AV output. A bread box with grey keys will always have the 8-pin AV output.
that's a good point, and I believe all the 64C and 128 models do S-Video. (At least all the ones I've seen so far). I'd be using a 4:3 LCD TV for this.

Hao-Kun no Fushigi na Tabi / Mystery Quest
Hikari Shinwa: Palutena no Kagami / Kid Icarus
Ice Hockey / Ice Hockey
The Legend of Zelda 2: Link no Bouken / Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
Metroid / Metroid
Moero TwinBee: Cinnamon Hakushi o Sukue! / Stinger
Pro Wrestling / Pro Wrestling
Roger Rabbit / The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle
Tobidase Daisakusen / 3-D WorldRunner
Volleyball / Volleyball
Yume Koujou: Doki Doki Panic / Super Mario Bros. 2
Zelda no Densetsu: The Hyrule Fantasy / The Legend of Zelda
I've never played an MSX game but I dream of someday getting a Yamaha-CX5M computer, which is an MSX machine that got a US release. It's extra-remarkable because it was designed specifically for electronic musicians, so it's MIDI compatible and has a lot of music software that I think would be a lot of fun to toy with.
The MSX/MSX2/MSX2+ is a goldmine of great games most western gamers don't have a clue exist. Especially in the platforming genre, so much good stuff. Personally I'd like to play through A Life M36 Planet: Mother brain Has Been Aliving:
Beat it and review it for us Bone!
And here comes some sacrilege in the house. Although I LOVE the C64's music (dat SID), most of its games are pretty shitty. Inferior ports fill its library, and its exclusives aren't even all that great. There are a few exceptions yes*, but exceptions don't disprove the rule.
However the Amiga rocks ass all the way around. Don't turn down an Amiga.
